yet another 'spun bearing' question...sorry guys

I know this is a topic widely discussed in these forums, but I haven't found a thread that actually answers my question. I have a spun bearing on a newly rebuilt engine. I don't believe that I will have to rebuild the whole engine, although many of you will probably say it will be a waste to not do the whole thing. Which I agree with. But....is there any way I can fix the bearing and all other necessary components without taking the whole engine out? I don't have the space or facilities to do this. What things will absolutely have to be replaced? Any help will be great. I plan on doing this myself, with the help of my aid at Checkers Auto Parts (he works on my car with me). Everyone says to me 'you are a girl! you can't do stuff like that!!! And that sucks, especially since my husband is one of those people. What a butt hole.

It might be easier to take the engine out and do the work. With a spun bearing, the crank will have to come down which will require that both the front case and transmission be removed. You could get by with getting the crankshaft worked and new bearings, especially since you said it has had a recent rebuild.
FYI, I just replaced all my main and rod bearings with the engine and tranny in the car. It can be done with the engine in the car, it will just be very time consuming.

if it's a crank bearing than the motor needs to come out, but if its a rod bearing then you need to pull the crank out which can be done without taking motor out but frontcase needs to come off along with tranny.

Yeah, it's just a rod bearing. The clunking came from the lower part of the engine on the passenger side, or so the previous owner told me.

Sounds like you may find more problems when you look inside the motor.
There is no (can I do it this way) and the problem be fixed. The motor will need to come out and the bottom end (all) bearing clearances checked. Sorry if thats not what you wanted to hear but its the way it has to be done.

I agree, the last thing you want to do when taking a car all apart is to realize you should have spent the extra hour or the extra couple bucks and saved yourself the pain of doing it all later. I have an engine that was just like yours, but I found out that it had a bad rod bearing before I put it in, and it turned out that the crank needed to be turned as well, and I think some of the crank journal bearings needed to be replaced. I just bought another engine instead of trying to find a remanufactured crankshaft or going through the pain of getting it machined.

If the engine screwed up a bearing, there's usually a reason for that. It's a REALLY good idea to have things checked out, otherwise you could be in for the same thing next go-round. Bits of the crank or bearing could have plugged up oil passages, or you might have a plugged one that caused the failure to begin with.
