I have a 1996 talon tsi awd with the manufacturing date, april of 1996. I recently checked my transmission code and it had a W5M33-2-MUZT. I was confused because it should have a NPZT. It had a cracked bell housing so i'm guessing the previous owner swapped it or something. My question is that is it okay to have a MUZT in a vehicle that should have a NPZT in it? Would it affect my t-case or lsd to some extent??

US TEL 2G 3/94 - 6/96 -> W5M33-2-NPZT
US TEL 2G 7/96 and up -> W5M33-2-MUZT

I'm not 100 percent on this but I think the casings are the same but they changed the internals up a bit. I don't necessarily see an issue but I am far from genius. Maybe a wiseman can chip in.

So the difference is the 57 tooth ring gear (1997-99), and the 58 tooth ring gear (1991-96). I'm not sure if the previous owner changed the t-case too, but is the MUZT tranny compatible with the 58 tooth ring gear or is it not possible? I need to know what year t-case i have.

I went through the same ordeal with my transmission thats in my car right now. I wasn't sure weather i had evo3 tranny, 1991-1996 tranny or 1997-1999 tranny. what i did is, i first determine what the transmission code is, then i had to physically determine what gears are in it. weather 57 or 58 tooth count. for the transfer case its pretty easy once you got it out.

Here are my links:

this first one provides all transmission codes:

this second link is how i did it to determined what tooth count i had inside the tranny. It will also show you the links on jacks transmission videos which you will find helpful in determined what transmissions you have and what year tc you have.

Hope this helps...

^^Check that second link. It provides all the information (Jack's two videos, to be precise) to answer your question.
