I am trying to build my own battery relocation kit. Now I know this has been beat to death, but my question is not about battery relocation but how to understand reading the gauge of the device accepting a wire. I know what 2 gauge is and 4 gauges, etc. but what is 0/1 or 0/2 gauge?

I want to buy a battery terminal that has 2, 2 gauge outputs and at least 1, 8 gauge output. This is the one I am looking at right now.

In the wire sizes 0/1 - 0/4, the 0 represents a term called aught, which is another type of gauging scale. This scale rates wire size by 0 and the 1,2,3, or 4 represent the number of zeros in the wire size Usually it is represented as so 1/0, instead of 0/1. 1 aught wire is the next largest wire size up from 1 AWG or 1 gauge, then 2 aught (00), 3 aught (000), and finally 4 aught (0000) being the largest gauge in the aught classification of wire.

From the looks of that, the product has one input that will accept either 0 or 2 gauge, and then another input that will accept either 2 or 4 gauge wire. Just a way of typing it to show you can use multiple different wire sizes.

The aught wires that the above poster is referring to are typically written as 1/0, 2/0, etc. There's no way that little distribution block would accept 2/0 wire (if for some reason it was written backwards). While he is correct in what was typed, the information does not apply to that part.

My brother has this stuff in his can and it's been working out great. Their wire runs pretty big, so if you check the specs on their 4 gauge wire, it really is about the size of 2 or 0 gauge wire. It seemed they underestimated by about one size in our findings.

You can search around for estimated ID's of stranded wire to find some measurements.

Well since I have two days off I didn't want to waste them waiting for the wires to ship so I headed around town to find 2 AWG wire. I called all auto sound, audio, security, video, etc. stores. None had them. I went to best buy and a tractor supply store; nothing.

Finally hit up Lowes and they had it. It's SUPER rigid, but it makes for chasing it through the car EXTREMELY easy. And it bends like soft metal so I can keep it tight around the turns. This will be interesting.
