Windows Tint - Darkness vs Functionality

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

My shit is so dark that even in bright Florida sunshine at noon, I can hardly tell what kind of vehicles are behind me -- I shit you not. At night it's hopeless and I can only see where the headlights are.

But you know what. Functionality can kiss my ass. Limo = :thumb:

Man, I need to move to california or somewhere that front window tinting is legal. A couple years ago I had a tricked out BMW 320I and had all the windows tinted including the front side windows. I got a 185.00 ticket and 4 points on my license. They wrote it up as failure to maintain proper visibility and control of vehcle or some shit like that. I went to court with invoices of new cars from the local dealerships that had front window tint factory installed that was darker than mine and basically they screwed me up the a#@.
I hate Michigan!

Yah, this is the reason i'm thinking of just 50% all around. I know its not much but it looks better then none and i live in michigan too. Anyone have picts of 50% tint or opinions on what i should do.

Hahaha. good ways to get out.

Take pics of your car without tint, also hold up a newspaper with the date that you can photoshop out later.

Then print as required and take it into the court.

or find someone with the same car and then take pics of theirs and take it in to court.

i did 20% all the way around. no problems seeing out of it. on my jeep though, i have 5% on the hardtop & regular doors. very hard to see out of.

my folks live out in the country so that means starlight, that and trying to see the ground behind me at night and around that beautiful wing... Part of it is the difference between the bright forward illumination and the dark (which in the country means dark black dark)

On flat ground it isn't too bad, but the rest of the time it's nuts. (oh and my night vision is not what it was when I was in my early and mid 20's now that I am almost at 30). Here in town I don't have any problems, but my folks live 2 miles from the nearest streetlamp. It is pitch black!

I'll look into those bulbs though thanks for the suggestion

I started with 20% on the back and then 35% on the sides... wasn't dark enough on the sides and changed them to 20% as well.

The 20% on the back is really nice at night especially if you have your car lowered.. the headlights of cars behind you get really anoying.

brcewane - in those pics is your tint 20% or 35%? I'm getting my windows done this summer, and im deciding between 20% and 35%. How was the night vision w/ 35%, and how is it compared to 20%?
In MI here the cops wont hassle you as long as they can see silhouettes inside the car, so im trying to stay light enough so you can still see figures inside.

Yah,its hit or miss in michigan. Closer to detroit they dont care but I had friends get pulled over plenty of times in other parts of the state like GR and lansing. One only had 50% in the front but the law states you cant have ANY at all except top four inches in regards to front windows.

i tint windows 5 days a week at my job. tinting the front window is not legal in CA.
State regulation requires 70% light visibility on front windows. With only the glass alone (without any tint) the light visibility is already around 70-80%. Also, I never heard of a tint manufacturer producing any film above 50% so there is no point looking for 85% window film.

i got 5% all the way around. and then got the windsheild tinted 35%. looks badass. i've had it like that for over a year and haevn't had one problem with the cops. i've even been pulled over a couple of times and they didn't say anything, which suprised me.

WOW!!!! I remember seeing a sweet eclipse show car who had 20% all
around including the windshield and he said he couldn't even really drive the
car cause it was so hard to see even in daytime. How do you drive at night w/
5% and then a tinted windshield cause that seems a little unsafe. Any pics?

Sun Tint in Santa Rosa, CA sells Forumula 1 tint at 85%.

It is 20% tint on sides/rear window. I don't have any problems with seeing stuff at night. I didn't really notice a big difference as far as night driving for both of them. But I did like how it looked from the exterior better with 20% rather than 35%. There is still lots of light that comes in the front windshield.

I just got myself a 02 WRX that had no tint, and in daytime driving I thought my eyeballs were going to fry out of my head... quickly I went and got 20% all around on it... looks awsome and my eyes are much better

well here is a pic of my car with 20% up front and 5% on back it looks darker than it is because of the angle that the pic was taken at but it is pretty dark. And remember once you go with tint you are never ever going to be able to drive a car without it again.

Ive got a ticket for my tint once. Laws over here are 35%.

I mean my windows are so black you cant tell the diffrence in paint on my car vs the windows.

I got the ticket, but to tell you the truth that is the easiest ticket ive ever got out of, I made a fake recipt for a tinting shop and said "removal of tint" blah blah blah dollars

There like "good job, dont do it again"

im like :D

Cheater :p

35% on the fronts.
15% on the back and triangles.
Easiest way I've avoided tickets is keeping the windows down!

I think my tint was somewhere in the area of $250. The installers told me that the Eclipse has a large curved back window which is harder to tint correctly than most windows. I don't know if this was a con or not but the tint turned out great and carries a lifetime warranty.
