Will this swap work?

I have a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST that has a blown engine. I've found full engines for around $3000-$3300, but I found a 1990 Eclipse that got a new motor installed 2 years ago for sale for $800. Its a 4g63T DOHC, 4cyl, 16v. I'm thinking of buying the car for the $800 and swapping the engine from that into my GST and save myself a ton of money. I'm just not very educated in DSMs and need to make sure that I can swap them and be ok. What questions should I ask? What am I looking for or trying to avoid?

Yes it will work. Most likely it is a 6 bolt so you will need to buy a few parts to make it work. (6 bolts are a little better than the 7 bolt that is in your car now). I am currently installing a 6 bolt block and a 7 bolt head into my 98 GST

If you have a complete 6 bolt, you may not need to buy much. If your 2G head is still good, use it!
You will need a 1G cas to 2G cas cable.
Are you manual or auto trans? ( If you are auto, you will need the full 6 bolt with a 2G trans kit from Kiggly)

In addition to the 6 bolt differences, if it's n/a, you will have higher compression and thinner ringlands. Not great for a boosted application. It could definitely get you by till you can rebuild your short block as long as your not running the crap out of the 6 bolt.

800 is a pretty good deal tho. Long as you can get the swap pieces and follow some of the writeups and advice on here about 7->6bolt swaps, you should be golden

It's not N/A, both models are 4g63T.

I actually don't even know what's wrong with my car. Basically my Radiator stopped working and I was running almost no oil in the engine so I overheated really badly. After the car cooled down, I checked the oil and it was sort of milky and had small pieces of metal in it. When I turn the car on, there is a really hard knocking sound. The mechanic who had worked on it previously (clutch) said I spun a rod bearing and quoted me $1200 to repair it. He recommended I just go with a whole new engine because there might be more wrong with it and I should just play it safe.

I'd take the mechanic advice on the matter. I mean if you really looking to get into the dsm scene. Buy the used motor it's a little bit of a gamble because your buy the car on the word of a stranger unless you can see the car running or drive it prior to buying it. And like mentioned above you'll need some parts to make the swap work. But playing it safe and buy a motor at that cost is really a no brainer. I mean taking the motor apart will give you a good idea of what went wrong and what is still salvageable on your current block for future salvaging of parts or a full on rebuild as a back up.
