Will a 92-94 TSI awd Tranny fit into my 90 GSX

Spline count on the output shaft to the transfer case will be the deciding factor. Do some research on when the splines changed . I know I had to replace the spline socket in my transfer case when TRE rebuilt my transmission due to the availabilty / cost of a new origional spline shaft for my 90. Plus they were shot anyway.

So if the spline count on the output shaft to the transfer case is different would I beable to just put a different outputshaft on there and then it would work? Also, Is that a hard job or cost alot of money? The reason i'm asking is because I might be getting a parts car from the year I stated earlier and it would be great if this would work.
Thanks again.
Rob.

As they said before, you have to make sure the spline count is the same. Depends on the build date on your car and the build date on the tranny you are putting in. Somewhere in 92 is the cutoff for 22/23 spline shafts.

Also, when sticking a 91-94 tranny into a 90 car, you need (from a 91-94 car) the shift cables, shifter base, shifter, and the brackets that hold the cables onto the tranny. This was discussed in great detail in a few other threads before.

The simple answer to your question is to use the transfer case and transmission from the doner car. Its a no brainer. They mated once they will mate again.
Changing the input spline socket on the transfer case is easy. Pop or press the bearings off the old shaft from the transfer case, take the new Spline socket and put it in the frezer, ( Yes COLD, or a snow bank ) Clean the bearings well and bake them in a 350 Deg oven for 15-20 min (don't turn on an oven set to 350 and bake it can thermal shock the bearings) Drop the three togeather and leave them to normalize and you are set. You will need a new O ring or some 999 silicone to seal up the transfer case again.

Or you can just change the spline shaft in the tranny, take off the outside cover and remove the viscous coupler and then slide the shaft out just look for the 7mm ball that should fall on the floor and bounce across the shop. Then you can put in whatever shaft goes with the x-fer case.
