Swap 92 AWD Tranny into 90 car? (Merged)

Kelvinb, ProjectTSI, I PM'd you guys.

Ok, I did the tranny swap, However the Non turbo cables seem too long, when hooked up on tranny and shifter sides, shifting is impossible. I switched to the 90 mounting bracket same deal. The cable and shifter base are from a 94 N/T (the shifter base is stamped 93.11), My only conclusion I can draw is that the guy sent 2g cables with it, as the cables over shoot the mounts, By ALOT. only 1 cable has the length adjusting nut.
I should have a 92 Turbo shifterbase + cables coming soon from a trade (YAY snailed..LOL), am I stuck waiting on those, or is there something, I am missing..

any ideas???????

Thankx

Just for reference.. I had a picture of a set of 91-94 Turbo AWD cables (top) next to my 90 Turbo AWD cables (bottom). Note that the mounting bosses (where they attach to the shifter mounting plate) are spanned nearly even on the 90 but are several inches apart on the 91-94. Also note that the 90 has two adjustment turnbuckles but the 91-94 only has one :dsm:

Looking on the cables you have there, now think I have 2g cables now..when I laid out the ones I have the, difference in space between mounting points where a little more than what is pictured above, BTW thankx for posting that..makes refering to it much easier.
are the cables for a 2G spaced wider than out 1g's?. I see no reason why I should have this issue..

I feel dumb asking this, but I have never done transmission work, so I figured I would check on this before I screw something up.... Haha.

Got a quote on a transmission rebuild for my 90 AWD trans, and....let's just say..."No, thanks".

However, I found a good deal on a local 92 AWD trans & x-case in good shape and am thinking of going ahead w/ the swap and just doing it myself (with knowledgeable helpers, obviously).

I currently have a 90 trans with 92+ shifter, cables and bracket.

Is there anything special involved in switching out a 90 --> 92 trans, or is it basically a straightforward thing? Like, any additional parts that I might need to purchase to make this work, or will it just bolt up? Additionally, is there anything recommended that I can do while my trans is out? I was thinking of installing a set of poly motor mounts while I was down there, for example....

Any insight appreciated, as always :)

I think you may need to use the 92 transfer case aswell. I believe the splines are different.. You may want to think about a good clutch if you're planning on making some power (if you don't already have one.)

EDIT.. Ok I saw your profile. NVM about the clutch.

I have done this job about 3-4 times in about 4-6 months. 2 times it was for myself and 2 othertimes it was to help my buddies. This was all done on 1st gens and i followed this vfaq every time. http://www.vfaq.com/mods/clutch-1G.html. if i were you i would replace the clutch, oem tob (throw out bearing), flywheel, steel braided brake line, cluth fork and pivot ball and slave cylinder. If you choose to just replace the clutch and not the flywheel you will need to get the flywheel resurfaced. If you buy both the clutch and the flywheel just throw the whole thing together. Also dont forget to shim the pivot ball it helps with enguagement.

hope that helps
David-

edit:sorry about spelling i am not good at it and without spell check your out of luck haha

yes he will need the matching transfercase too! remember their are a few diffrent sets of splines from year to year. I cant exactly remember which year has which.

Should have mentioned, I have an ACT2600 already installed (bought the car that way). Also, master and slave cyls have been replaced. Good idea about the steel braided brake line -- hadn't thought of that. :thumb: Any excuse to buy more "fun" parts, I guess, LOL.

dnhieu, you seem good at this stuff -- if you lived by me I would kidnap you and make you help me, LOL. ;)

Anyway, thanks :) Everyone gets rep points, as always :thumb:

Yeah, the transfer case is included w/ the transmission I'm buying. Made sure of this before I put in the offer to buy it :)

WOW now since im single i would let you steal me LOL . Anyways back on topic. 20 bucks for a steel braided clutch line is well worth the money. It would also be a good time to get yourself some Penzoil syncromesh in that transmission.

Hope that helps

I've been using Redline MT-90 in the tranny and transfer case :thumb: All good so far (except for the fact that my transmission is dead, LOL).

oOo yeah your going to need a friend to help you take out the transmission plus put it back in. everything else you can probably put back together yourself.

Also Penzoil syncromesh is cheap as shit and you dont have to wait for it. It works just like BG Syncromesh but like 10 dollars a bottle cheaper.

okay so i've completely swapped everything from a 92 eclipse to my 90 transmission and transfer case wise, all linkage, brackets, shifter assembly, ect..

had issues with the flywheel and clutch not fully engaging when i first installed everything but found out it was because i was using a fidenza flywheel without the spacer and longer bolts, now that i've purchased all new stuff again and got it installed the clutch is great and has no issues, but after the install now when driving low rpm or high i get a grind going into 2nd and 3rd. No other gears, this was a used trans but was told its a shep with no proof and that it was in perfect condition with about 2500 miles on it so i wouldnt think its the syncros but obviously not completely sure.. anyone have any ideas what it could be that i missed thats causing it to grind? thing that puzzles me is usually itd grind with linkage if the gears were on the same side like 2nd and 4th or 1st and 3rd but its 2nd and 3rd thats grinding.... there is a local drag event on the 13th and i really want to have my car ready for it... thanks in advance!

might sound stupid but how do you tell if your clutch is dragging? If its trying move in neutral?

dose the vertical linkage arm that is mounted on the tranny need to be a 90 arm or a 92 arm or are they the same

I have a 92 tranny in a 90 talon I switched the bracket that holds the cables but not sure on the vertical arm I do not have both and im not sure with year of arm I have.

I cant for the life of me get it to shift to 2end at high rmp and it is stiff as hell to move the gear shifter after I put a load on it but once I get it worked loose again then it isn't bad till i do it again.

now I think the horizontal arm is correct but the vertical arm I believe is not from a 90 tranny but im not sure if it is because I don't have both one from a 90 and 0ne from a 92 to compare. can anyone confirm that the vertical selector arm on the tranny is different between a 90 and 92 or the same

thanks for the help so far
MJP

It's is different. The entire setup on a 90 is different from any other year. In my 90 I put a 95 trains and transfer case in. I had to remove the linkage and shift cable holder from the 95 and put my 90 on it. Work great
