I bought a 1992 AWD that was wrecked. I have a 1990 AWD body. How hard will the swap be? Will everything swap right over? Do I need to change the wiring. Also I will be using the 1992 ECU because I dont have a 1990 ECU will this affect anything? Thanks for any info you can offer.

Just found out the car is an automatic, so that means it has the smaller turbo and as far as the 4-bolt rear goes I cant use it if I wanted to swap to a manual tranny correct.

How strong are the Automatics? Thanks

I just found out a few days ago that the rears in the automatics have a differnet gearing then the manuals do,39 for A, 45 for M.

I got a great line on a 92 JDM GVR4 tranny locally with only 39K on it, and was wondering what all was needed to make it work perfect in my 1990 GSX Eclipse. I have a Fidanza fly, and RPS2600 clutch for the Eclipse which I assume will work on the other tranny also. The tranny comes with the transfer case. Will these bolt up no problem in my Eclipse??

I also wanted to swap the cables to the 91-94 ones. Does anyone know where I can purchase these?? I figure I might as well do it, and the short shifter since everything is out right now, right?!

Let me know guys, I am new to these cars.:)

It will bolt up , but It will not work for long .

Final Gear ratios are different .

If you have an old US tranny , take the front ring ad pinion out and swap it into your JDM tranny , but you need to make sure that the berings are the cofect high ( not to lose or to tight ) .

Like out of my 1990 GSX tranny? It is in perfect condition. or can I just put a new rear end in it? I wanted to do the 4-bolt swap anyway, could I do something with the gearing back there instead. I would rather not open up a good low mileage tranny....

Are the ring and pinion gear ratios the same out of a 91 fwd turbo as a 91 awd turbo?

There is no point in swaping only the rear end , cause the front diff ratio is not mached to the rear .

Now if you want to change the rear to the JDM rear end , that has no point cause the car will have no top speed ( Top speed will get lower , but axelleration will be insane ) .

You have to open the tranny to make it work in DSM .

And yes the front ring and pinion out of your 91 should work .

FWD and AWD front diff are differnt in desing and ratios .

you can look up all the info on Vfaq.com ( drivetrain , then got to gear ratios ) .BTW The GVR4 RS 5th gear ratio is wrong on that page . It's not 617 it's 647. I know cause I have mine apart and counted the gears ;) .

I just looked in the VFAQ and it says that the 1G AWD cars/2G AWD cars have the same rear end ratio (3.545 39/11) and the final is the same also (4.929) as the galant VR4s? What I do not understand is why there would be a problem with switching the trannys when the rear ends are the same? How could that be bad. Sorry if I am ignorant, haven't worked with these cars that much.:D

Unless the JDM VR4 tranny with the switchable stuff, is diff. I better check and make sure that the tranny is the JDM one, and not just a 92 GVR4 tranny....

If someone wanted to change the final drive ratio on an AWD, you need to change the ring gear on the front diff along with the stubby Front Output Shaft that is driven by the center diff. These are both inside the transmission. Then the rear differential ring and pinion gears must be changed to match. The rear diff ratio will be slightly different but will equal out when multiplied by the 1.090 of the transfer case. IF the Galant GSX gears will fit in an AWD TEL, they would probably work pretty well for a high powered AWD drag racer - you'd have to launch at a slightly higher rpm, but each gear would give a higher mph than before, so you could leave it in each gear longer. Top speed could be over 200mph using GGSX gears in a TEL AWD with enough power to spin at 8K (using a TMO ECU to allow the higher limit).

Ok, a budy of mine is selling me a jdm galant transmission and xfer case assy. (non switchable) and swears it will work w/out switching anything. Call me stupid but I'm still unclear if it will work in my 91. Any ideas?

Anybody put a gvr4 ring&pinion in a TEL 3 bolt rear end? The reason I ask is because I am getting a 1990 jdm gvr4 tanny & transfer for my 91 talon tsi awd. I've heard that I need to switch the rear end gears to match the tranny's. Is that true? And what year of gvr4 rear end would I need?

I have never seen a rear end for a vr4 for sale around here. I'm not sure whether or not they suppy them where you are, but I can see that being difficult to find....

Yes, if we could do that then that would be a very good option, instead of opening up the tranny. Anyone with info. please share. Thanks!

Ya, I agree with mackzero, why would it matter? What is the problem if the gear ratios are the same? An explanation would be nice.

how can you tell what kind of tranny you have, i recently bought a tranny and it seems like it might be a galant gsx tranny, when i back up the back wheels kinda want to slip some and it seems like it doesnt want to move very easily. the guy told me it was a 92 awd tranny, i think i might have gotten ripped off. thanks.

The code on it. Does it say w5m31-XXXX on the falt part on the bellhousing? If not what does it say?
What do the shift levers look like? DO they look like the ones on your old tranny? Gsx trannys need to have internals swapped with your old tranny... Ther front axles spin a different rateds than the rear.
I'm going through cracking trannys now... I might go with the gsx but I will use some of the old parts.

im not at home now so i cant get the numbers off of it but i will. but with the levers i thought it was kinda odd at first but the horizontal lever that is held in place by the pin seemed to be from a 91+ it was a longer lever, and the vertical lever that is bolted on seemed to be the longer one also from a 90, that is was led me to beleive i had a different tranny than the guy told me i was getting.

here is the number that is etched into it kw5m332npxv ln2325, let me know something so i know if i need to change the gears. thanks.

The galant GGSX tanny, w5m31, definitely has a different ratio. And it is not built as well as the w5m33's due to bearings. Based on that, I don't think you can just start switching gears, as they are different internally.

According to my manual, the stateside T/E/L and Galants share the same ratios.

JDM may be different.

i got the tranny from some guy in california, i put it in myself. i have been told that my center diff is gone when it does the weird wheel spinning thing. so i am going to try to have that welded and see what happens. you read that part i typed about the shift levers being different sizes right? it shifts alright i think the syncrose are toast in first though it likes to grind alot going in.
