Thats an mp3 of what the thing sounds like. Its driving me batty =[

From 3000rpm up to redline, there is a nasty buzzy tooth rattling vibration coming from the talon. I cant identify under the hood where its coming from, but it makes everything buzz, you can physically see the ps pump buzzing in its mount (i have the belt off of it) and you can hear the exhaust buzzing underneath the car.

This is all with the car in park bytw. When driving, it does the same thing.

its a 95 TSi awd automatic. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, to be completely honest, I have no idea when the timing belt was last serviced. I bought the car with a toasted tranny, and it had been sitting since the middle of 02.

I replaced the tranny in it with the help of a friend, and have basically had it parked since then, starting it every week or so. Does it "sound" like they do with the oil pump shaft is out of phase? I myself have never heard one out of phase to compare with.

Its got fresh oil, new belts, the balancer looks to be in pretty good shape (passed the line test). The problem im having tracking it down is because the sound simply sounds like its coming from everywhere :sosad:

You may want to check and see if any of your exhaust heat shields, especially the heat shield near your catalytic converter, is making contact with any part of your exhaust. I had a horrendous sound that sounded like it was coming from the engine bay. It turned out that one of the bolts that attached the heat shield to the body broke-off and the heat shield was making contact with the catalytic converter. The heat shield did a nice job of transmitting vibration from my exhaust system throughout the car.

EDIT: I looked at your vehicle profile and saw that you are not running a cat, so this may not be the problem.

Did you ever run the car when you originally bought it?

If it does it in neutral and while driving it pretty much rules out driveline problems and narrows it down to something engine related.

It definitely sounds like the balance shafts arent in synch with each other. I would start there especially if you have no idea when the t-belt or BS belts were last replaced, it would probably be a good time to check that off the list.

Yes, I started it multiple times before replacing the transmission, and yes, it was still doing it then :D Ill check the Bshafts in the next couple of days.

Anybody with opinions on the sound clip, please, feel free to chime in.

Hey my car makes this exact same noise your car makes! Finally someone with the same prob LOL.

The differance is I have a 1990 Gsx and mine is more near 4000 rpm .

You ever figure out what was wrong?

Could you send me a link to the first vibration sound file? The undercar one works but not the other

i would check the balance shafts as said, the exhaust heat sheilds, and also wheck to make sure that you timing belt isnt rubbing on the cover anywhere.

Yeah i just had my timing belt replaced and when i got it back it vibrates more and more the higher the rpm. I took it back and he tore it apart and said "all of the marks match up fine" so i'm havin the same dillema.

You have the same dilema?

I think the timing marks can be right on but the BS can be still off.

I bought this car with this problem so Im assuming someone replaced the timing belt and didnt get the BS timed right.

If you just had your timing belt replaced and you have this problem then its your balance shaft.

Obviously the guy who did your car has no idea what a balance shaft is, or doesn't know DSM's enough to know that it has to be IN PHASE. It has nothing to do with the timing marks being off. If the oil pump sprocket is out of phase, you will get that vibration that keeps being mentioned. The easiest way to make sure it is in phase is to put a screw driver in the pilot hole (check VFAQ for what i'm talking about) or to take off the timing belt (which you most likely will have to do anyway) and point the timing arrow of the oil pump sprocket up at 12 o'clock. Then let it go. If it rotates CW, then it is out of phase and you will need to rotate it 360*. If it is in phase, it should fall CCW towards 9 o'clock (or the actual timing mark on the front case).

Also, I know its a PITA (even more so on a 1g) to replace the balance belt, but make sure it is replaced this time with a new belt and is correctly timed also. If you're having trouble getting the crank sprocket off, with the T-belt STILL ON (you may as well do this as the first step), try something called a "bump start" with a 1/2" ratchet in the sprocket and resting against the axle. This will break your sprocket loose in no time. Either that or put it in 4th with a good friend and go to town with a breaker bar.

goodluck.

I have this problem also, I am pretty sure though mine is my downpipe. I blew apart the flex section and I beleive the pipe inside of it it what is rattling. It only happens about 3000rpms and above

I had a noise just like the one you described it was horrible bolts came loose on almost everything especialy my power steering pump and it happend when i changed my cylinder head to a new one with new valves and seats and everything. i just recently put my old cylinder head back on after i put stainless steel valves in it and the noise stoped

the driverside axle extension, which is bolted onto the block literally unbolted itself due to so much vibration. I doubt that my timing belt has been changed. But when the car is cold, the timing belt is loose to the point where it can be deflected up to 3/8". I also get a noise from the timing belt area as though the belt seems like it is rubbing unto the cover. I have the wierd vibration at 3000rpm upward, new OEM engine mounts btw. hoping to pull the front off to get the T-belt off to deal with this as soon as I am done with my other mods (clutch and suspension)

So I bought this '90 Talon bout a month back and I have been doing nothing but buy part after part for it. Continously tighting bolts because they always became loose. This morning I woke up and decided to look into "Why?" it Vibrates so violently. I read several posts and then I came across this one. blcknspo0ln I followed the 'point the timing arrow of the oil pump sprocket up at 12 o'clock. Then let it go.' procedure and WoW! The car no Longer vibrates. So basically what I want to do now is Thank you all!! :thumb:

I hope everyone else with their wicked vibration gets it resolved because it sucks.

I am having the same problem and i do noyt every have balencing shafts for im foing to try to see if oil pum is out of faze. after i put my 1992 ECU into my 1990 plymoth lazer rs.
thankyou
