Yet another new noise coming from my engine. Kind of a WHHHUUUURRRRR... noise that gets louder fast as RPM increases. This is a 6-bolt '90 motor in a 94 TSiAWD. Sometimes I can make it go away by blipping the throttle but usually constant from 1k to 4k rpm (since this noise started, I've been easy on her). I know it is not tranny/drivetrain related because this noise occurs in nuetral when parked. I don't travel more than 3mi since I have my oil cooler bypassed while waiting for new oil lines to be made (an external oil cooler line got cut, I just put the other end of the good line to the other fiiting on the oil filter housing to make a loop and not loose pressure.) A friend mentioned the oil pump gears are messed up or I need a pump replacement. Someone else thought it is the timing belt cover hitting the cam gears or something. I need more possible causes. I'm going nuts, I have had this car since new and this is the 3rd motor. Any more major problems and the wife says this cars gotta go....(I don't want to have to start listening to her now, but she may be right)

The motor was rebuilt about 7k ago (it was one of those "JDM" motors that supposedly had <40k on the clock). The tensioners for both belts were not replaced though... I picked the motor becuase of all the suggestions to get the early 6-bolt. I ended up with the 1990 6-bolt with the 16G and regular injectors. So... since the motor is in the car still and it will be easier, can I leave the front shaft in without rotating the bearings? I know it is better to replace/rotate them but the mechanic (dealer) said the shaft is pretty ceased up and I figured they're blocking the oil anyways. Do I even need to replace the rear one? I ordered a stub shaft, rear bearing, and all gaskets.... Did I miss anything?

Almost forgot, I have a spare oil pump cover and pretty new oil pump from a previous 7bolt engine. Anyone know if I can use the oilpump and gears on the 6 bolt cover. I heard the hellical (?) or angle cut gears are better... any input.

I'd like to thank everyone for helping me (and others benefiting from reading this) with this nightmare.

As far as the 7-bolt oil pump on a 6-bolt front case, I don't think they are compatible.... but be sure to let us know what you find out.

Leaving the front B-Shaft in place to block the oil holes is perfectly fine.
The rear B-Shaft bearing doesn't need to be replaced.
There's only 1 press in bearing, and it's deep inside the block.
This bearing doesn't have an oil passage....
The outer most rear B-Shaft bearing is integral with the inner oil pump cover.
Open that VFAQ link, read and learn something before you ask lazy questions.
Doing this job took me a weekend....
I removed both balance shafts with the engine installed and replaced every seal on my engine with the exception of the rear main seal, but that will be done soon with a clutch install.....
$500 in tools and parts and about 20 hours, and I'm rolling pretty nicely without a single drop of anything under the car......
Not trying to be a dick, but our engines really aren't that hard to work on.....

Peace

car is going to be towed from the Mitsu dealership to an independent mechanic who has removed balance shafts before. Total bill for them removing the oil pump cover and telling me they won't go any further = 4.5hrs @$90/hr. Not to mention, I also wanted them to fix my rear brakes (only if they could fix the motor but they went ahead and did it anyways...) and charged me for that work too... fpr some reason, they can't come up wiht a total bill for me... "we'll call you with the total..." after several voice mails to the serve manager with no call back... I don't know what the hell took him so long to take it off so someone please tell me where the heck they got this figure.... I'm already upset and hopefully things go well at the other place. If anyone has videos they want me to hear, just post them and I'll tell you if it sounds like my problem.... I'll save you some money....

if i was a mechanic, your the sucker i would take money from. no offense but you need to be rather educated to own a dsm, or be loaded in the wallet. afterall, they have problems, but problems are puzzles, and i love to solve puzzles. im not gonna mention doing the work yourself because you obviously have no care to save money. the fact is, i came into automobiles with only knowledge of how they worked, not how to do anything to them. i never went to a tech school, and am still a senior in highschool. ive done a number of things on my car so far, and didnt take all that long to learn. if you can read a book, and have someone with the tools, you can do it yourself. im sure we all have SOME time on our hands.

I read the last post and I had to say something here although this has no bearing on the main subject.... I'm a network engineer...I travel quite often and very busy. I'm writing this from a hotel room for goodness sake. I am not in high school, I do not have all the time in the world. I do all of the wrenching on my car myself... if time permits. I've owned, operated, and worked on this car longer than you have had your drivers license. So, if I was in high school, got cut from all the sports teams I tried out for, and I got to spend most my freetime in mom and dad's garage, I would have not had to spend money on diagnosing this problem. Sometimes spending some money now will save more money later on. Time is not a luxury that I have in bulk. Not everyone on this site is of the same age, background, or still in high school! I value the opinoins from people from all walks of life that share ownership in a DSM. Thinking everyone has the time or thinking owning this type of car would not involve spending money once in a while is just plain ignorant. Anyways, to keep people up to date....

car is at another mechanic, balance shaft removal going good without any problems. Leaving the front one in and installed the stubby in the rear. It should be fixed before this weekend.
