Why so much turbo lag?

I went to the drag strip again tonight hoping to finally do better than 16.4 at 84 (last years time)... My first (and best), was 15.9 at 86.. I noticed that I wasn't hitting full boost (12lbs) until almost 5k rpms. Once it hit, it felt like it pulled, but it seemed like it ran out of steam pretty quick. The turbo is a tdo4hl which I think is a 13g... But i never did identify it completely:confused:. This definatly doesn't seem right. One thing I should mention is that my bov has a broken nipple, I rtv'ed the plastic tube back on and thats worked for a while. I also noticed when I when I took the bov off the other week that I could blow in the lower part of it and I could hear air leaking. I have a new 1g bov on order, but could that have been my spooling problem?

Ideas?

do you have any pics of the turbo?
I would start with the boost leak test
Any pre-turbo exhaust leaks?

Dude you should of hit me up I have a couple of 1g BOV's Laying around. Cedar Falls?

Also how was the turn out?

Fuuuuuu.... I already spent 100 on a new one. Oh well.

Yea there were a pretty good amount of street cars there for it just being a friday fun night. Maybe 20-25 street cars if I had to guess.

By the way I see It, It looks pretty dirty It seems like you have an oil leak somewhere. And I suggest you to switch to a 14b turbo. They are a little bigger and spool really fast , on mine i can get to 15lbs in no time at all. And they are super cheap. Just make sure It doesn't have any shaft play, if It does , just make sure to rebuild It.:D

Yes sir that is a beloved 13g:cool:
The "hl" came on factory 3000gt turbo models and stealth platforms.
I had one on my car that the previous owner had sourced out for a stock replacement. I put that bi*** through hell (23 psi on occasion) and its as tight as ####y.
I still have it laying around actually. I need to sell it. Or clean it up and use as some sort of decoration.

Does your wastegate look damaged? I had a problem similar...

Definantly something to check on. If you can't find any trace of a pre turbo exhaust leak then this may be it. It will either be the: head-manifold studs or nuts are loose, head-manifold gasket it bad, the manifold-turbo gasket, or loose turbo bolts. Worst case senarios are that you have a cracked manifold, a bowed manifold from being through so many heat cycles, or a cracked turbine housing.

Much luck in figuring it out.

Don't worry guys, it's a lot cleaner now... That pic is from like 2 weeks after I got the car. I'm thinking it might be the exhaust manifold, and I do have a broken manifold to turbo bolt so only three are holding it on. There are no oil leaks that I know of, it's just dirty from never being cleaned.

Does your wastegate look damaged? I had a problem similar...and man clean up the engine, i dont wanna see what the rest of the engine looks like just from seeing the turbo...

The wastegate hose is connected to my lower intercooler pipe

Thats partly what i ment, if u managed to hit ## actuator with anything and dent it or crush it, it can do this.... i no mine did. When i bought my 14b the actuator was crushed kinda. I went to step on it and it just wouldnt go....new wastegate and BOOM. Problem fixed.
