Well after long hard consideration I have decided to build a 420a and go turbo on the Avenger again. I am new to the forged aftermarket options though.

Mostly I see Wiseco and JE as my options and have been looking for opinions of pros and cons of each. It sounds like the Wisecos are cheaper and less prone to piston slap with cold starting than the JEs. But I am reading that the wisecos have a tendency to crack in the skirt over time and that does not sound good for longevity.

My interest in this project is the long term, it will be a DD though I dont drive it in the winter months. I dont much care about the cold start knocking as long as the motor does not fly apart.

I am used to this engine that I can turn the key and beat the crap out of day in day out and not ever have a problem, as well as my wifes Eclipse GS with 230k miles on it with the only maintainance besides oil changes being the timing belt and components.

I'm wondering what my best option is to get a 300hp motor in that car that does not involve a 4g63 swap, but that I dont have to do anything more than oil changes to maintain it for 100k miles at a time.

So lets hear some ideas or experiences from people that can steer me towards who makes the better pistons ;)

Good luck with that, any turbo car is going to require more maintenance than an NA car(unless your running a VERY aggressive cam and are making a lot of power(aka Mark B.)). 300whp is not that hard to make with a turbo on this platform. Since you sound like you want to go the least troublesome way it will cost you more. I would recommend the Hahn set up, with portfueler and all. That way you still retain the factory ecu and have no problems with stuff like MSnS. That is just my opinion. Good luck, its going to be more work than you think.

Well thanks for your opinion, I am not worried in the slightest about the turbo part of it. I'll be using the same setup I had before just with an E316g instead of a 14b. The power adders and fuel is the easy part I had that all figured out, I just got too greedy with the boost on an unmodded engine and cracked a ringland on number 1 piston. So this time I want to build an engine that wont complain if its 92 octane instead of 93 ;)

The odds of me putting more than 20k miles on this car are not very strong but if you understand what im saying...I dont want it to break, or to just wear out any time soon.

If you are only shooting for 300Hp, go with JE. They are cheaper in both aspects of the word, but that is only in comparison to Wiseco. They are still stout and will easily handle 300hp, considering 300hp can almost be had on a stock block with a good tune. Wiseco, although, are higher rated out of the box. I will say this though, the 420a HP record holder Rob Montalvo @ 737 hp is using JE.

Soup to nuts, MS will probably be your best bet. It's a little more time involved as far as installation, but the price is on par with Portfueler or an SFMU/SAFC setup. And as far as bang for your buck rating, MS wins hands down. With your intent of the daily beatings, I say get MS.

Thanks a bunch guys, I already have an MSnS built on a v3.0 board from the previous run at this project. I'll be backing it down to just a piggy back to simplify the extensive tuning to a second gang of injectors that are only used in boost, and maintain the stock pcm so it still functions well as a DD.

I think ive found the answer to my simple goal. I'm going to do a 2.4 swap with SRT rods and pistons, that gets me a motor that can withstand the goal, while keeping cast pistons that are meant for a turbo AND a lifespan of 6 digits for mileage. Its also cheaper to build, but my only problem at this very moment is finding a 2.4 core =P

So I guess there is another question that may apply to people reading this, though I could probably find the answer if i searched...how does the E316g perform on a 2.4 litre engine. Is it much too small or will it still have that punch and rip that the small frame mitsu turbos are so much fun for?

UPDATE...I found a 2.4 from a 2001 PT Cruiser, Turned out to be junk, looks like someone tried throwing new bearings in it without any machine work after it must have trashed some bearings. Plan is back to the 2.0. I went with wisecos after hearing they are quieter than the JE's with their offset wrist pin. The block is bored and the rings are ground, just waiting for my lazy butt to put it together. Thanks everyone for their input.

Buy my built 2.0 ; )..

In all seriousness, ive built a couple 420as, JE hands down. who cares about sound? and really theres not much of a diff, performance over sound.. Maintenance is super important, they do become attention whores..But noting to extreme, one thing id say to you, is dont run in the winter.. A: it silly, 2 : with the crazy Ia temp swings, your gunna be so frustrated with tuning, i run MSnS as well, and i love it, but i think tuning your Accel enrich and other "start up" aspects will be a paint, youll have like a summer and winter setting.. i think youll get annoyed.. We all know boosting a 420a isnt cheap like a civic, so save the investment by not driving in the snow.

Also keep in mind theres a few things to modify and change while your in here.. go with ARP hardware up top, and a mechanical tensioner. yes more $$$, but cheap insurance.. My hrydro once blew out at 3k..they are junk.

or go Portfueler. but its eh..

Thanks for the input, I wont be driving it in the winter, the car has not seen snow in 6 years at least. ARP is no quetion, i got that down, just curious on that mechanical tensioner and where it comes from. I have seen a bit about it on 2gnt but have not dug into where its from exactly. The megasquirt is only going to be for the boost portion via 4 secondaries, im keeping the stock ECU for those reasons you mentioned, temp swings and tuning are not the most fun, and i like all my luxuries such as cruise control, its just simpler that way.

ahh kool kool.. to bad you didnt buy my motor, it has all arp , and the mech tensioner ; ) but check 2gnt. theres alot of info on it..
