This was ALWAYS a question in the back of my head. How much would it cost to rebuild a 4g63T? From block to fully built? I don't seem to be able to find a fully built car that I can afford. (I'm on my own now.......... no help for parents).

I'm going at it on my own now. Any ideas?

Well a "new" EVO starts around $33,000

What did that have to do with the original post?

Anyway, a OEM stock build if you did everything yourself may be around $750 or so. If you go the forged set up, it will be a bit more. You should be able to reuse some stuff like the rods and lifters and stuff like that.

A stock rebuilt block/head would cost around $1k,that's how much it would cost me at my machine shop, as for a forged engine, it depends on what setup etc.

Well it will depend on what you do to it and where it get it done. I did mine for $750 or less with all machine work and new pistons, water pump, oil pump, etc. and OEM stuff..

the question should not be "how much dose it cost to build an engine?"

the question is " my budget is XXXXX dollars, Now what can I get and do?"

Back yard rebuilds on the cheap can be as little as $200-$400 to out the door full race preped engines costing $15000 or more.

Your budget/wallet will let you know where you can play.
like the old saying goes.......

Speed cost money, How fast can you afford to go?

Yeah you said FULLY BUILT... thats expensive as heck. That means replacing EVERYTHING!
And not just replacing it but upgrading it to the extreme.

Its A LOT easier to just tell us how much power you are wanting to make and then we could inform you as to what needs upgraded.

Well including just the engine block and head its not to much. I got a rebuilt engine from turbotrix for $6800. That is a 2.3l stroker with wiseco forged pistons, Manley i beam rods and all arp bolts and a full racing head.It has a 2.4l crank all gaskets replaced and the water pump, oil pump.

I have about $3000 in my fully built motor. Probably 700 hp & 8500 rpm capable.

About $600-700 in machine shop work, and the rest is parts. Weisco Pistons, Manley H-beam rods, ACL race bearings, 272 cams, +1mm Ferrea valves, Manley springs/retainers, MLS HG, ARP head studs and a complete OEM gasket set. I did get a few deals from a friend, so maybe add $500 or maybe you can find deals too. :thumb:

How much do you have to invest? When you say fully built do you mean race ready or do you mean a bare block to a functional engine? You should be a little more clear in your post. Let us know what you want to do and we can point you in the right direction.

yes to him above.
Once you know how far you want to take you car, then you can start planing it out!
If you dont have a ton of money right now then you might have to build it slow, getting reliable part to ensure you car out last what you may put it through!

As for cost.....
i did a complete rebuild on my 6 bolt with
mahle .020 pistons
eagle rod
new water pump
alternator
starter
CV shafts
3" turbo back
new boost gauge
SBR MBC
HKS turbo timer
walbro 255

getting my block hot taked, bored, and resurfed
my head hot taked and polished
and did it all with about $2500 including the labor

it took me almost 6 months cause i didn't have all that upfront soo
if this is you route then its possible!

just takes time

Well I was wondering how much it would cost to build the motor back to stock so I could save up....... then be able to add bigger turbo, better exhaustvmanifold, better intake manifold and all the other stuff for intake and exhaust. Better cam gears...? Just a ballpark is what I was wondering.

Fullt builtin the sence I'm not starting with an built engine. It will be in pieces.....................

what is the HP goal you have in mind?

if you save up about $5000-$7000 that should get you in the ball park. for what you have listed, engine rebuild intake, exhaust manifolds turbo ect.. along with the other supporting hardwear you will need, DSMLink, wide band O2, fuel pump and the like

I know the basics, that's about it...........

I know the basics, that's about it...........

Just rebuild the bottom end with forged pistons, and rods, new bearings, and clean and polish the crankshaft. This was you will just have to worry about the top end when you plan on getting into some serious HP. Grab some wiseco pistons, and eagle rods and that should be able to hold at least 700 HP right there. You can run stock cams for a while, but I would at least get some fidanza or AEM cam gears. You can put in some PT cruisers rockers and 3G eclipse lifters. That right there will cost about $1300 or so.

thats what i would say... build the bottom end first then reg stack parts up top!!
Cause if your plans later on are to get all the goodies, bigger turbo, cams, inj, ect.. you would need to make sure your pistons and rods will handle thats! and since you already in there with the engine open, you would save time and money to bore and do all that good stuff and put the pistons in to insure nothing bad would happen!
You dont even have to bore out you hone it and sized for some forged pistons.

even the stock 1g rods can get up to 350...400 hp before the go bye!
soo if you don't plan to get above 400hp to save money you maybe be able to keep the stock pistons!!

but good luck man

I've gotten over $1000 pretty much in my bottom end alone, Wiseco pistons, Manley rods, clevite bearings, gaskets, etc... Still have stock main bolts though. But that doesn't even include all the machine work I had done. Crank mic'd and polished, cylinder honing (did myself, but still cost for the tools), hot tanked, all cost over $150. The head work was fairly expensive too (didn't do any upgrades to the head yet, the bottom end broke me), a valve job, resurfacing, cleaning, plus a few other things cost me about $250.

The machine work is pretty expensive stuff, especially when you're going to bore your block (each hole costs around $25+ around here, so you'll have almost $100 in boring alone), align honing your maincaps for ARP main studs will cost a pretty penny as well. Also if you don't have the tools to do it either then it will be even more expensive.

Building an engine isn't exactly a walk in the park.

Wow sux where you got your machine work done LOL. I got my block cleaned, bored and honed, resurfaced, mangafluxed, and all that for like $150. Then the head was resurfaced, cleaned, and polished and the crank cleaned and polished for like $100 or so.

Damn!!
