Alright guys, well I just finished my 14B install in my 95 GSX. All is well besides some minor oil leaks on the return line and the SS feed line at the filter housing. There was also a VERY minor coolant leak from the front banjo bolt on the turbo. I tightened it a tad and I think i went away. Now the turbo is spooling really late because I think there may be a leak before the turbo.
Now on to the problems.

1. The turbo does not smoke at all besides at WOT sometimes it blows out whiteish grey smoke. I'm trying to think of where it could be burning coolant. It never did this before the turbo install.

2. There was some white smoke the past 2 days at the manifold. I'm thinking its the shitload of PB Blaster that I sprayed all over the car but I'm not sure.

3. There's a smell coming from my engine that I can smell if I pop my hood and it becomes more noticeable when I'm driving and really get on it. It smells like burning plastic sort of, with a mix of burning rubber. The lower heat shield is not on the car because it's a pain to get on and I haven't put it back on because I haven't had time. Nothing is touching anything hot so I 'm confused...The only possible thing is maybe I pout on a new 4 ply exhaust mani. gasket as well as antiseize on most of the bolts and the turbo-mani. bolts.

Any help? Thanks.

were would I be able to pick that up at?. And looking at my VC there is a small amount of oil up by lettering, i also looked in the spark plug opening and there is small amount of oil around the gasket in there but does not seem to drip down and pool by the spark plugs, also I noticed today looking at my car that my oil filter is bubbled up by the black grip part, and when I touched a bubble it popped and a small about of oil came out, anyone had that problem before?

Autozone, oreillys, napa, have them for sure on the shelf most of the time.

I looked at my filter while my car was running, it almost looked like the oil was sepping through. Im changing oil soon so I will just buy a better fitler.

change it now thats not good and another sign of blow by :ohdamn:

I was changing my oil probobly today anyway, Yea I use fram, Im either going to get Fram tough gaurd or maybe HKS filter, idk yet.

I was going to change my pvc valve and breather when I did my VC gasket

I just wanna chirp in and say DON'T DO FRAM! There are alot of threads out there and instances where The filter leaked. I experienced that with the 1g I own now and I had to buy another motor due to oil deprivation. When I contacted Fram they found no "Flaws" in their filter. Just my .02

Dont use Fram oil filters on these motors; they dont flow enough and can cause lifter tick and other oiling issues. What do you mean by change the breather? Are you saying you have one of those little filters on the left side of the valve cover instead of the hose that goes from there to the intake pipe? If so, this is a bad idea. Not only will the filter become saturated with oil and make a mess, you will also suffer pcv problems. That hose is supposed to allow the vaccum from the intake pipe to remove vapors from the motor when youre under wide open throttle. These vapors will degrade your oil prematurely, and, your engine will not be able to adeqetely vent blowby under boost conditions which is bad because the blowby will seek other means of escape through your oil seals, oil cap, valve cover gasket, and oil dipstick tube.

One more thing, this "white smoke" youre referring to is more likely the harmful vapors I mentioned above and not coolant. An engine naturally ends up with some moisture within it. ( If you dont believe me, just go look at your tailpipe when you start your car and you will see SOME clear water droplets coming out here and there) This moisture is seperated from the oil when the motor reaches operating temp and it is the job of the pcv system to expel this from the engine.

I've had that whole bubbling thing happen to me when I had a Fram oil filter on another of my vehicles. And it's not oil pressing it out, it's just that the material that they use for that grip is getting too hot for too long and melting, because once it's cooled down the bubbles become hard again.

Thats what my moms boyfriend told me to, I will pick up a HKS oil filter, 3x more expensive but im pretty sure It would benefit me more. Yea I dont have a cute little filter, i have the hose that runs from my VC to my intake but that is not connected right now and never been chaged in the life of my car so im just going to pick up a new one, same with the pvc valve.

So my car emits white-ish blue smoke ONLY accelerating from a stop. WOT = no smoke after that.

Compression Tests Results:

(1. 135 psi) (2. 135 psi) (3. 135 psi) (4. 130 psi)

Leak Down Test Results:

all cylinders hold "shop pressure" no leakage AT ALL.

The shop i took it to tried to tell me i needed to pull the head off and replace ALL gaskets/seals.. If the compression/leak down tests were good, should i waste the money? They also told me my valve stem seals are bad.. But wouldnt it smoke ALL the time if the valve seals are bad? I recently purchased a 14B thats in great shape.. Could it be the turbo seals on my AWESOME T25?

I would much rather install the 14B on my own and save a bit of money instead of spending 800+ dollars on a head job. Any reccommendations? Thanks!

Correct me if I am wrong but black smoke is running rich, white smoke is anti-freeze, and whitish blue is oil. Does it burn oil? When is the last time you checked your oil level? If one or more of your valve seals were leaking badly it would burn oil, and it could smoke all the time or if just one or two of them is slightly leaking you would not see the smoke too often. Also at WOT your car pushes a lot more fumes through your exhaust system which is probably why you do not see smoke at WOT.

Its definitely oil. Its bluish. I check the oil every day. I have to add oil to it every once and a while. im hoping and preying its only the turbo seals.. When i rev it up in neutral, it also emits the smoke.

Hi everyone. I'm brand new to DSMtuners as well as the tuner world. I just bought a '98 eclipse (with mods) GST and had a question about it. I just had the oil changed yesterday with 30w synthetic oil. I drove the car out to the store. Then to mcdonalds which is like a block from the store. While sitting in the drive thru I noticed white smoke coming from my exaust (fairly faint/fairly noticeable). I have read alot of places about how it most likely is coolant being burned in the combustion chamber and it could be a cracked head/block/bad gasket. But I also read a couple places that it could be that they just added too much oil. Could this be true? If so, how should i fix it or does it even need to be fixed. Any help is appreciated.

Synthetic oil burns white too. You need to do a leak down test to help find where it's coming from.

Take off your intake pipe that goes to the turbo. Grab the little nut on the turbo fins and pull in/out up/down. If you can easily move it around, the turbo is bad. Everything should stay right in place.

Do a turbo shaft play test... and check your pcv valve and circuit... an obstucted crankcase ventilation system may producte overpressure and oil burn...

Bad rings, valve seals, turbo seals burn oil too... and in some cases a good turbo without shaftplay can burn oil if the oil seal is broken... check IC pipes, if the pipes have oil, maybe the oil seal from te turbo dont work anymore...

Oil smoke is said to burn a bluish white, but regardless of color two things make coolant burn distinctive. Coolant is basically just steamed off and it dissipates pretty quickly, oil smoke tends to be 'thicker' and unless a wind is blowing it away it will linger and make a haze. Coolant also smells sweet when it burns, whereas oil smells... well like oil burning.

If it's coolant, you're probably looking at a cracked head or at least a blown gasket. A further test would be to test for combustion gases in the cooling system. You can pull the coolant fill cap off when the engine is cold and start it up and look for excessive bubbles.

If it's oil it could be rings, valve seals, valve guides, PCV system, overfill, etc. Further tests would be a vacuum test, compression test, leakdown test (and checking turbo shaft as mentioned, and IC pipes for excessive oil).

Thank u for all the helpful insight guys. Havent done a leakdown test yet but its on my list. One of my mechanics says hes pretty sure its my valve stems so I might start there.

Do a compression test to test the head gasket. if everything tests fine 155 - 165 give or take if it is higher then 165 then you may have oil leaking from your valve guides which will seal the rings and give a higher compression, and if it is Synthetic it will burn white. if everything is fine there i would suspect your turbo and look at a rebuild kit for the turbo.
