Whirring sound, turbo has oil on it, so does transfer case

When you hit the higher rpm's i hear a whirring. Is this supposed to happen. Somewhere i read it means you have a turbo leak, other places it mentioned the drivetrain.

It seems to be coming from the engine compartment

Also i checked under the car, the turbo has that oil-dirt mix on the bottom and looks like it has been leaking oil in the middle (inbetween compressor side and turbine side).

The transfer case has has oil on bottom, but i am taking that in to check the recall.

What does whirring mean????
How do i check the turbo and maybe fix it?????

did you check fluid levels in both the transaxle and the x-fer case? sounds kinda like the noise my tranny was making when i ran it dry to the shop the other day

You can pull the lower intercooler pipe off of the turbo compressor housing and check the compressor wheel for free play. If it has significant play, your turbo may be failing. If this is the case, you should think about either having it rebuilt or replaced before it fails. If it fails like mine did and don't want to wreck your motor, you'll be stranded.

The check only takes 5 minutes (one hose clamp).

A true "whirring" sound is MOST often something rubbing on the Timing Belt, cover. etc - & the earlier Oil Pumps whir also - If my TURBO was whirring I'd have to park it before I ended up with Bearing Material in my Oil Pan~! - Whir is a GOOD verbal noise decription BTW...
