Whining noise from awd? AWD maintenance...what do you do?

I was on vacation and my car (97 TSi AWD 65,000mi) makes a whining noise that speeds up as I speed up. I don’t notice it until 40mph and then it just gets louder/faster as I get up to highway speeds. It has been happening since I bought the car but it seems to be louder. I originally thought it was my tires that made the noise but now im not sure.

I guess my question is...is this normal? Do any of you have a whining noise from your AWD. What kind of AWD maintenance should I perform on a semi-regular basis?

Your transfer case may be dying. Check around the local dealers to find one who'll do the recall.

yeah im having the same problem, although my noise starts at about 15 mph and continues on if I am accelerating. I have a 91 eclipse GSX, should I be worried?

Yep, especially if the noise changes in relation to your speed.
