so it ended up being a blown head gasket. i got the head off and i am going to do a gasket match port job on it. is there anything else i should do or check while i have the head off.

with the head off, your going to do a gasket match, are you pulling the head fully apart?
I hope so so you can clean it after the port work.

Also use some good valve stem seals when you reassemble the head.

To add in with what was said above, you should also get a new IM gasket put on as well (thermal barrier gasekt) and if you haven't already, get the revised lifters put in as well. Valves, springs, cams, guides are your choice to do. If you don't have ARP head studs yet, get those put in as well.

Its definlety a good time to upgrade to ARP headstuds...

... and make sure to replace all gaskets/seals while your at it

I would upgrade as much as you have the budget for while you have the car apart. I would do Valves, Springs, Retainers. Head studs and quality gaskets are a must. If you have some extra cash go for a set of cams, if not build it so you can put cams in later down the road.

I agree with the parts lists above, I would add a pressure test and re-surfacing to the list if not all ready mentioned
