Ok, on my project Tsi, that i got not running

I had no compression on cylinders 2 & 3. I am kind of an idiot because i didn't bother to check 1 & 4, i just figured i would start tearing it down and inspect it. I am still kicking myself...

After pulling the head, i am even more at a loss. This is what i found.

The head looks really good, overall. I do have one point in question, in between the 2/3 cylinder combustion chambers, the passage is filled with soot, like exhaust was leaking into here....this would explain the compression issues. The problem with that theory, the head gasket "looked" fine. I know a visual inspection is just that....anyway..

I get a little further in and find the balance shaft belt is broke....adds new shit to the mix!

I am guessing i will cart the head off to the machine shop and get it checked over, replace the belt and call it done?

I haven't really dealt with balance shafts in my past, eccentric shafts yes...:p

**Balance Shafts can only damage the motor by the belt fragments causing the timing belt to jump right?
TIA!

I guess i could pulls the cams and do a fluid test to see if any valves are leaking? I could also pull the valves in the #2 & 3 cylinders to check for bents valves....dammit i was trying to be lazy.

I have another shortblock i am assembling, i was hoping to make use of this motor until the new engine is ready...without a ton of money.

I got all the stuff to re-assemble tonight, headgasket, belts, etc.

Take the cams out of the head and see if all the valves sit flush.

I did that, i took the head in a black room, then shined my LED stylus through the exhaust and intake ports, i saw a little more light than i would care to see.

....i don't know why my dumbass didn't do a leak down before tear down....

Well, i have decided to pull everything. The last owner had replaced the bellhousing and i wasn't sure of his work....so i pulled motor/trans. The engine bay needed to be cleaned up anyway.

Now its time for a rebuild and re-assembly. :rocks:
