I'm going to be getting my timing belt done soon, once this new job starts. I have been looking at them for a while now and just can't seem to make up my mind. I would like to see what some of you may have to say about these kits and your opinions on them. I'm only looking to make 300HP at least once all of my maintenance is done and I start modifying, so I'm pretty sure I'm not going to need a Kevlar Timing Belt.

The 1st kit I'm considering:

VIP Garage: Complete 7 Bolt Timing Kit
I noticed this kit doesn't come with the bearings I believe.

and the 2nd kit:

4G63T Timing Kit Package 4Turbo Engines 1996-1999 as well as 4G63 4G63T Accessory Belt Package

I was also going to go ahead and replace the crank pulley with a Megan Racing one. If any of you have experience with this crank pulley please share your experience, good or bad. If you think I should just replace it with an OEM one, please speak up.

Thank you all for your time and Happy Easter. :thumb:

Def. don't go with the ebay kits. Search and you'll see that they have a tendency to break.

spydaski: I decided to go with VIP's kit. Also, is that for just labor or for parts and labor? If its both than yea def. a good deal. Especially from the dealer.

you won't regret it. We've sold well over a hundred of these kits and NEVER once i had any kind of issues. There are some manufacturers that make crap, we all know that. But these are quality parts made by the rubber masters of the industry.

Thank you so much for all of the great info prostreetdsmx1! :thumb: I'll be buying this kit soon once the first or second paycheck comes in from the new job. Can't wait to do business with ya!

So what did we decide would be the best idea? Cuase im in the same boat right now. I talked to the dealer around here, they said 330 for everything to get installed. Sound about right?

I don't think that's too bad. Plus, it's the Mitsubishi dealer so they know there stuff and warranty their work.

I use Greddy kevlar belts only. It may be pricy but i dont mess around with weak links

I've just purchased the Greddy belt as well and was wondering if you replaced yours every 60K miles like an OEM belt or, since it's stronger, leave it on longer.

Partsdinosaur claims to sell the same stuff Mitsu get as OEM parts. I got my timing kit from them and a GReddy Kevlar belt from Extremepsi. I did the work with a friend who knows cars pretty well, he charged a 12 pack so labor was cheap. I think the experiance was well worth it since I had to help out a friend with his install. Try it out, one of the big reasons I didn't go with the local dealer is they are the only Mitsu dealer in the area and they take advantage of the fact.:dsm:

Its still recommended that you change them at 60,000 miles.

My opinion is that changing them has to do more with the pulleys rather than the belt. I know at the 60k when I changed mine, the belt looked fine, the pulleys were starting to look suspect.

Anyways. Auto parts is a shady world. Alot of parts that are sold as Mitsu or Ford, etc... are manufactured by say Wells Manufacturing and then the same product line is sold and rebranded to Autozone as Duralast. But do not construe this statement as meaning all off-brand names are name brand. It requires some research. Whether PartsDinosaur uses off-brand names of name brand parts, I don't know. I tried them, I am satisfied with my experiences. Others may not be.... but I have yet to hear anyone who HAS used them complain or report a massive amount of failures with it. And yes, mitsu product should be trusted, but in the same regard most people that report timing belt failures etc... are using Mitsu products. So take it with a grain of salt. I point this out not to imply in any way that the Mitsu belts are bad, rather that they have failures aswell and are not imbued with some unholy anti-failure magic either. Parts Dinosaur, VIP all stand behind the the product they sell, and so does Mitsu. I think in my opinion they are ok purchases.

I can't believe so many people on here are saying that OEM belts are better than any other belts. Are they better than e-bay crap? Of course. Are they better than kevlar racing belts? Not even close. A lot of people who are using stiffer than stock valve springs have broken OEM belts prematurely, while kevlar belts hold up just fine.

There is a nice greddy timing belt kit on ebay for $130. My friend just recently bought one for his gs-t and he loves it. I think I might replace mine soon with the greddy kit cause I dont know when it was last changed. But if you just go on ebay and type in eclipse timing belt it comes up on the first page.
