i just purchased a timming belt kit , Conti Synchrobelt Kit made by Continental... i was wondering if anyone has experince with this product... what did you think of it and is it doing the job?

came with...
timming belt
balance shaft belt
timming belt tensioner
balance shaft tensioner
and idler

will this belt kit fit correctly?
says "oem" im assuming it does..

thanks

I am with Montoya. I will only use OEM timing gear.

Umm, not to be mean, but why did you buy first and then ask for opinions about the kit? That doesn't make much sense. If you don't want to do the job twice, you should have reviewed your options before making a purchase.

well , a friend told me to order the kit....he has had the same car as me and done the same thing... the only problem is he didnt have the car long enough to really see if everything went ok... he maybe drove it for about 5 to 10,000 miles and sold his car thats why im asking....

I've never seen a "kit" with the auto tensioner. If it has one, I would be surprised. I'm not saying it doesn't, but it's a first on me.

If it doesn't, price one from Chrysler and then from your after market of choice.

You might be surprised.

As far as belts, I use Gates. You can use OE belts also as I think they got past that awful timing belt problem in the early 90's. Or at least I think they did.

As far as Continental, I've not encountered them around here. If they are a good quality belt, and more importantly installed correctly, you should have no problem.

Just make absolutely sure you install it correctly. Also, now is a good time to replace that water pump.

Good Luck

I have heard some bad things about Gates, and seen it in person. About 10,000 miles after replacement, the Gates belt broke and well, you know the rest.

I didn't go OEM, and because the teeth on the belt are a little bit more aggressive than say OEM (I guess OEM's teeth are rounded on the ends??) I had a little bit of vibration as the belt got worn it. So if you encounter this, don't worry like I did, it eventually goes away.

for sure im going to be doing the water pump also... the kit does not come with the hyrualic tensioner... but thank you all for the information

Great because I bought the kit thinking it might be a no name piece of junk....Just had to hear it from some one else who has used them ...Helps alot...Thanks again

How many Gates belts have you installed in your life? I have never in my professional career lost an engine to a faulty Gates belt. I trust them implicity.

I've seen several engines which had belts installed either incorrectly or failure due to an idler not replaced or such. But never to a faulty Gates belt.

That's not to say it has never happened. However, I trust my own engines to Gates.

I'm installing the Prostreet kit as we speak, everything looks good except they sent me a 1g water pump not a 2g so i'm out the 180 for a new one from the dealer.

are you talking about prostreet online or us? a lot of people say my screen name and don't see the vendor name underneath. LOL.

To each their own when it comes to belts. I myself have only down 1 timing belt change. My friend John Ryan (1000hp talon) replaces them regularly and told me to steer clear. Just thought I would relay the information from someone who knew quite knowledgeably, not to say you don't.

conitech works fine for me...conitech is the company mitsubishi leased out too to make the belts etc for our cars. they are OEM replacements, and also they make higher quality belts for BMW, mercades etc.

I purchased the same kit. Installation was fine and although I only have around 2000 miles on the kit, it's been going fine so far. I have heard that they are the only company in Europe to give engine warranties with their belts against failure, so that was good enough for me. Also, a friend who owns a performance shop recommended them.

You guys use belts? I use duct tape and 3 paper clips.

This thread is going no where now.

I bought that exact same kit and plan on using it for my second timing belt change. Normally, I would use OEM, but I did some research and found good reviews on the Contitech belt. It was about $100 for the timing belt, balance shaft belt, balance shaft belt tensioner/pulley, idler pulley, and tensioner pulley. I bought a new hydraulic tensioner from somebody for $45 and an ITM water pump for about $50.

I work for a Mercedes, BMW, Audi and VW parts dealership and we use the conti stuff on all the euro cars. I ordered that same kit for my car and put it in. Real good quality and no problems so far.. Been about 5k only though

I am making statements about cars you and I drive. Cars that are on the road everyday. If you want to talk hp over 1000, go see Shep. That's a whole different realm. I am referring to a belt that I would install and when done, drive to Florida with confidence. That's the install I'm talking about. That's what I am trying to help people in here with. The racers know themselves what they want to use, and when to change it.
Nothing they do applies to your car or my car. The parts may look the same, but the circumstances are totally different.

FWIW, I am installing the conti kit as we speak on my 90 talon tsi. The idler pulley is different than the factory one in the regards that it will require a shorter bolt. Just wondering if anyone else had this issue? The factory one had a bolt that was closer to 2 inches. The new one only needs about 3/4 inch bolt because the center of the bearing is countersunk.

For what it's worth, here's a pic of the timing belt and balance shaft belt in the Contitech kit. Note the part numbers.

When I go to mitsubishiparts.com and put them it, it comes up with
Old Partnumber: MD115977
New Partnumber: MR984778
Engine - Camshaft & timing - Balance shafts - Belt
BELT

Old Partnumber: MD110029
New Partnumber: MD326059
Engine - Camshaft & timing - Timing belt
TIMING BELT

Just thought I'd put it out there in case anybody cares

I never did determine the exact length of the bolt, but the bolt referenced in there seemed correct and is going on a thousand miles now. Seems good to go so far. :talon:
