6-bolt - flywheel is held on by 6 bolts, uses bigger rods which means better horsepower support
7-bolt - flywheel is held on by 7 bolts, uses smaller rods, about 50HP less in terms of support on stock internals...all dsms late 92+ are 7-bolts.
The 2G Motor introduced better "flow" characteristics (Intercooler) and better compression which is what gives the 2G Motor a 20HP advantage over the predecessor.

your talking crank hp right, i would hate to see someone blow their engine and say, well it dyno'ed at 350+ whp, shouldnt it hold up to 100 hp more? it is a 6 bolt...paranoidTSi said:1st gen motors have a 190-195 HP rating (depends on where you read) weither its a 1st gen 6-bolt or 7-bolt...
the 6-bolt can HOLD more horsepower on stock internals than 7-bolts can...roughly 450HP for a 6-bolt and 400 for a 7-bolt
