Which clutch issue do I have?

I changed the clutch on my first DSM purchase, a 90 talon tsi awd, and after replacing all new fluids, getting everything in working order. I cannot get the transmission to go into gear. If I turn the car off, and hold the clutch in, with it in gear, it will move in that gear. If I start in neutral, and then try to put it into a gear, it usually grinds. I've tried shimming the slave cylinder rod to give it more reach, but it still doesn't work. The pedal is very spongey, so I'm guessing I'll need a new master/slave cylinder. Anything else that could be the issue? I want to cover all of my bases simultaneously.

Does your clutch pedal adjustment good?
or air in clutch line.

It has been bled and there was no air in clutch line. The adjustment should be whatever the hydraulic system adjusted it to when the clutch was fully bad before my purchase of it. I'm not sure how to adjust it back to where it is supposed to be.

You may have popped the seal in the master or have it so far down in its travel that it no longer builds enough pressure. Also you may want to look carefully at your pedal assembly and make sure it isnt warped to the point where the clutch can no longer work properly. That's a common problem with 1g's.
