More cool air is always good and there was even a dyno test about it with vented hoods in Import Tuner. I say that if you wanted to go extreme with it, leave the gap, add chambers to run the air to wherever you wanted it to go, and then gap the hood in the rear (Drift style) so that even more heat could escape. As for the mesh idea, I would personally paint them black if you go that route, so it's not noticible until you get up close to the car.
