where to start performance?

signal alter. Mine came as a plug in, no wire splicing or any of that. Only true thing that I know it did for me was to help keep the a/f r more consistent. Can't say it changed the timing curve. Didn't care, and still don't. Its paid itself off with the mpg saved.

Yes, the true performance does come from piggyback systems like ECM, MS, ect. Costly and more complex to work with, but better. Since mines a DD and not setup for performance, I'm not worried about a ton of performance changing upgrades, yet. Once you start working with the performance changing setups, you need to upgrade the system. As I said, it wasn't a performance chip for anything like racing or etc.

The biggest thing many need to look at especially for a DD cars value. In my case a 95 eagle talon ESi is only with between $2-2,500 kbb and the insurance companies around here go wild whenever you start listing modifications. I don't see putting big money into the car (turbo system, fuel systems, ect.) if the cars not worth that. Tis all. Food for thought.

What signal is it altering?

Where did you plug it in?

Do you have a wideband? How did you determine that it kept your "AFR consistent?"

An alleged ~3mpg sounds like your driving habits changed, whether or not you are conscious or admitting of it..

Steps to take.

Cai
Light weight rims.
underdrive pulley.
Header and free flowing muffler.
poly urethane motor mounts.
tune for the ecu.
Port everything that can be.
Cams either new. or regrind by delta.

This is the steps id take if i had to.

But if it was me id save my money and save some more and buy a awd 1st gen.
You will never never regret doing that.
I would keep this car stock and get it clean clean. Put a real good stero in it and be happy with it.

does anyone have any suggestions on what brand of intake (also, should i go cold air or short ram.?) headers and cat back exhausts.? i also know that the gs-t exhaust's can be fitted to rs/gs models so any suggestions there.?

it'd be highly appriciated.:D

Read this: 2GNT.com Forums - Viewing topic - Important components to get NA whp He holds the NA record, so I'm pretty sure you can follow what he is saying...

The best bang for you buck is going to be buying a Megasquirt set-up. You can pick up a used MS-1 unit for pretty cheap and I guarantee you'll gain more from that than probably any of the above mentioned combined.

For cheap though:

-ANY ebay intake with a decent filter will be good. A pipe is a pipe. If you like spending $250 on a pipe with a name go ahead.

-Since you are on limited budget you can probably pickup a full ebay exhaust as well. No, its not going to last as long as a custom built or name brand, but you could probably buy 3 full ebay set-ups for the price of one custom built one.

-Good luck finding an underdrive pulley. They are like gold now.

-Pull any extra weight you have in the car out.

I'd imagine for autoX you would want a 4-2-1 over a 4-1. As for intake, You can find a used V2 (best on the market CAI for our cars) for around $50-100 just put a fresh filter on it. If you have the budget I'd get a custom made CAI, but you could be talking a pretty penny for minimal gains over an ebay pipe.

Just add 'nawwwsss' and call it a day. (sarcasm)

No but in all seriousness of course you should have the usual Intake, headers, exhaust, whether the header is 4-1 or 4-2-1 its not a huge difference (a 4-2-1 won't get you 5HP so it's not worth it really, spend the money on other mods)

Remove your cat to make it free flowing if you can.

MSD ignitions go a long ways if you plan to add nitrous / turbo down the road or build a nice NA monster motor

A pulley like an the unorthodox pulley is only $250 and you'll feel a difference right away. Hope this helps!

thanks for all of your help guys. :D. keep all of the suggestions coming please. ;) it is very much appriciated. ROFL

I would go with the CAI if your wanting to do autocross for the simple fact that your probable going to run it hard for x amount of time. The CAI is longer so it gets its air from right behind the bottom of the front bumper where as the short ram will get it's air from inside the engine compartment causing it to have warmer air.

To the OP. Just bough another eclipse. Good motor but needed a tune up bad. I will tell you after spending $200 in parts for the tune up I think I gained more performance from just that than I ever did on my other eclipse with I/H/E. I would for sure start there get it running nice, do a Compression Test to see where the motor is at, then move on to some performance mods to get a little more zip. Don't plan on having a fast car unless you are going turbo.
