started up the car, drove about 100 yards down the street, maybe 2-3 lbs of boost.. not in the throttle at all. and as the rpm's rise there is a loud whine that gets louder as the rmps rise. Then it felt like 1 cylinder gave completely out and ran extremely rough. The car died. when i started it back up, it still feels like its running on 3 cylinders, i don’t believe that the whine is still there but i didn’t rev it up to check. however, there is now a loud engine knock. I took out the stethoscope and the knock doesn’t sound like its coming from the head. I’ll do a compression check next… Where should I start looking?

stock block, 88K miles. just put in a twin disc clutch and shep stage 4 transmission about a week ago. If I pull the pan, would I be able to tell if it crank walked?

You need to measure crank end play to determine crank walk and truth be told, it's not as common as people claim it to be.

Since you have an internal engine noise, do what was already suggested and check the oil for shavings.

Ok.. so i started it up and it runs fine for a second, just to check, and the whine is still there. killed it, then started compression test. pulled the spark plug on the far left.... COMPLETELY soaked in oil, steaming oil coming from the plug tube. same with the next one in. the last two only had oil around the top 4 threads in the middle of the plug.

I'm about to drain the oil to see what i find. I'm hoping for coolant.

drained oil.. there are not any metal shavings in the oil. There is also no coolant. What would cause oil to saturate the cylinders?

since there was so much oil in the cylinders, there wasn't much point in doing the comp test and filling my compression tester with oil. This has to be something that would affect more than just one cylinder. That's why i was thinking it was the head gasket or crank.

At this point, its a question of do i pull the head and do the gasket? or pull the motor. and rebuild the bottom end?

I say valve cover gaskets. The spark plug ones to bw exact. I tthinkthink they soaked your plug and made it run on three becquse one was soaked in oil.

Clean that oil out of the cylinder (vaccume or comp air) and do a compression and leakdown test. This would help determine the problem being head gasket or not. Could be vc gasket, hg, or valve seal. Was there oil on top of the plug as if were coming from the vc?

ill clean it out and do the comp test. there was no oil on top of the plugs, just in the cylinders.

from left to right, 146, 147, 153, 153. ill do the leakdown test this weekend. dont have time right now
