We have Modular clutches in our 2g's. That means our clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel come as one piece. I'm getting the SPEC stage 3 this winter. I can't wait!

You can convert to nonmodular if you want. it's just a little harder to install and I believe you need flywheel bolts from a neon. You dont have to stick with a modular tho is what im trying to say.

...stick with modular, wouldn't have it any other way :thumb:

May I ask why you want to change?

Way to bring a thread back from the dead...LOL.

Modular is better imo, but check out neons.org for info on swap. those guys do it a lot

looks like im bringing it back from the dead again LOL, computer was down for awhile and forgot all about this thread. the reason i wanted to convert, is the fact that i cant seem to find that many modular clutches with decent fly's, vs. pretty much any combo you can throw at nonmodular clutches. but i guess i see some of the points that modular is better, but i cant seem to find much for some reason. all ive found is like ebay garbage, and really pricey mod. clutches. but i guess it is good that you get a new fly each time you change your clutch LOL, anyone know of any decent priced, and decent in itself, modular clutches i could try?

thanx

try SouthBend Clutch. http://www.dxdracingclutches.com they are amazing people. Im fortunate enough to live 30min away from them. I've delt with them alot. Good stuff.

They will do all sorts of stuff not advertised. Call them and bug them, you can likely get a custom clutch built.

Since I'm currently researching this for my car; here goes. I would also choose non mod over mod, for 2 reason's; cost flexibility and choice flexibility (Ok I guess that's one reason; flexibility :p ). I am running a stock 95 Neon flywheel right now. What the Neon guys are using is the Fidanza. I didn't do a search on cost/availability on the fidanza because I already had my flywheel. If you want to do a search, use the 95 neon for an example. They also had flywheels on 96-99 but that was only on some the Mexican built Neons (as I understand it). The only thing you would need for the "modification" is the longer neon flywheel bolts (cheap and easy to get).

As for the clutch, choices are many. What I probably am going to get is a kevlar disc ($160 - $190) with a centerforce pressure plate ($160). The pressure plate is a stage one but more than enough for my 142 tq numbers. There are stronger PP's out there but then you are into the $300 and up range. I wanted to find a whole set-up for around $300.

Couple of links to start you off:

and of course the current favorite:

Now for the modular clutches out there. That E-bay "crap" that you mention appears to be a pretty good choice for our modded NA's. The Sach's modular runs about $300 and it is spoken of highly by the Neon guys. If that makes you nervous, The PT Cruiser (non turbo) modular (which you can also find in the $300 range) holds some good power. Some guys are racing that with their 2.4 switches (including turbo or nitrous) so that seems to be a pretty good choice.

Hey, how's that for information :sneaky:

Now, I'm currently following a thread that talks about using the 1.8 Audi PP................

Good luck on the choices,

MB

Edit: Just looked up Fidanza's. Low ball special price (though it's over now) $360. So figure in the $400 range. That's from Turbo Dynamx, Inc.

If you looking to go the lightweight flywheel option youll want to get the 95 style non modular clutch so you can utilize the lightweight flywheel, spec makes clutches for the 420a and soon i believe act will be releasing a 420a clutch setup

Actually, it appears that ACT now has the 420a clutch available (non mod). Though when I called about it, the salesman still had the pat answer of "it's not available yet, but we're looking into it". Gotta love one hand not knowing what the other is doing. I have lived spec problems and have seen plenty of problems with spec. I strongly advise to stay away from spec. Do a search and take your chances from there.

Now, I have on order a PP for a 1.8 audi that I am probably going to match up to a non turbo Plymouth Sundance 2,2 disc and mate that to a 95 Neon flywheel :sneaky: .........I love "crosspollenation" of products. Especially when it saves money :thumb:

Yes there are actually alot of problems with the SPEC clutches, seems more problems come from the Stage 3 more then any other, while we personally run the stage 3 and have had no problems ,many customers have called us regarding issues with the pressure plate area cracking etc etc, and after speaking with spec about the issues they said they wouldnt warranty them due to mis-use, so whether the problems were " supposedly fixed" or no we cant verify that info, were going to call ACT and check the status as to when the 420a clutches will be available and probably offer a group buy so everyone can get in on the deal

Yes there are actually alot of problems with the SPEC............... after speaking with spec about the issues they said they wouldnt warranty them due to mis-use,

That is where they lose me. EVERYONE else is at fault. They even told one member that at 5k (after his clutch blew up along with others) his clutch was worn out. Not even racing it.

Sorry, the problem is that they don't back up their product. That's all I'll say about it. :shhh:

Cool offer on the group buy.

Wow, I hope my SPEC stage 3 doesn't do anything stupid like that. I've enjoyed nothing but reliable clamping power from that thing so far. I'm not tossin HUGE numbers at is, but its seeing some power. I don't think I could ask for a better clutch.

What do they mean "mis-use" its a racing clutch... when you race, your using that thing exactly the way it was built for.
