When do you shift? [Merged 7-8] points shifting revs point

Everyday driving I try not to hit boost. Save alittle gas. With a stock and a race, you want to find the powerband and shift then. There are many topics about shifting and I don't know much about the stock 14b setup and its shift points, but in the 2g you want to shift right after 5.5k so you are basically shifting at 5.5-6k in the rpm band.:thumb:

I am still trying to improve my 14 flat at the track. I raised the boost from 12 to 15 and still hit a 14 flat. I was wondering when the best shift point is for the 14b. I usually hold first and second to 6800rpms. Third a little less. Is this too high? Need some input before i head back to the track. I am mostly stock except for a 2 1/2in turbo-back exhaust, wires, K&N, MBC, & free mods. Perfomance clutch and short-throw shifter too.

The big thing about that is your Launch man...

what are your 60ft times, the better your launch out of the hole the lower your over all e.t. will be...

Yeah, its a little high. The turbo's boost diminishes after 6000 RPM. After 6000 RPM it's only spitting out hot air. I usually shift at 6100 RPM, that way you fall into boost again in the next gear.

ya but 1g turbo goes further then 6000 rpm.
max ho is rated at 6300 i believe.
that being said, at the track you launch at say 4-5 grand, so shifting at exactly 6300-6500 may be tough, besides first gear flys by so quick, i would say anyhting between 6500-6800 would be good for 1st-2nd.
2nd -3rd should be at mid 6000's.

I hvae a 1998 gsx eclipse. the first owner striped the clutch but i believe they replaced it with a factory made one. when i race i loss major power in the higher rpms in like 3 and 4th gear, but my questions is when to shift??? How high do i stage up, and when i stage do i just hold the clutch down or the break??? at what rpms do i shift 1-2, 2-3, 3-4?? any help would be great!!!!

thanks everyone

With the stock turbo the boost falls off at like 6k so dont rev much past that. Dont just hold the clutch in in first gear at the line and rev the shit out of it. Keep it in neutral. Push the clutch in and stick it in first and hold it at the rpm you wanna launch at as late as you just so you have enough time to get it to the rpm you want and hold it steady without making a fool of yourself and having the other dude take off and your not in first yet. Reving the crap out of it with the clutch in is one way to head down the road of crank walk or just holding the clutch in to much, unless ive been misinformed.

I was just wondering, what rpms do most people drive theyre eclipses to before they shift? Im talking just pretty much basic cruising type driving.

also whats not a good rpm not to drive over for a somewhat long period of time. Just wondering because i have no idea

i usually shift at 5k in 1st(wheelspin, im only a gst)
then i hit 2nd, and i shift at about 6.5k
and ill take 3rd all the way till like 7 i think

but for in cruising around

usually 4.5k in 1st
4k in 2nd
and 3k in the rest.

my cousin in his GS runs it to redline when he races(he still loses LOL)
and when cruising, he doesnt shift till its at 5k, even at part throttle. he usually cruises in 3rd at 5k forever. and he wonders why his engine just blew.

:p ohh welll

i leave mine at 3k, anything over ill shift, just because in 4th gear at 2 1/2 if i oress on the gas its slow

Hell, I go WOT (wide open throttle) till I see God, THEN i shift... LOL. Nahh I usually shift at about 4krpm or so cruising. 7k if Im feelin like an ass or racing.

You want to run an engine at the lowest speed it'll deal with. Shifting up through the gears while accelerating -not racing- it's better to short-shift first at around 3K, then do your real moving in second and third. With a T25, there's not much reason to rev past 6K. You're turning 4K at 85 in 5th (AWD), so anything up to that must be okay.

If you're under extended load -such as a run up to Reno- it's easier on things to run a lower gear, higher revs and less boost.

 WHAT?!

 Josh, read it s l o w e r. You'll get it soon enough. ;)

As for the topic: I shift around 3.5k when cruising.

on a nornal day i shift at 4 in first, between 3.5k & 4k in 2nd. Then 3k after that
