ooooooo the second gen dsm non turbos? wait i'm not sure how this works, non turbo cars are called n/t? and then automatic transmission cars are called n/a? or do i have it mixed up =\

n/t-non turbo
n/a-naturally aspirated (means no forced induction or nitrous)
a/t-automatic transmition
m/t-manual transmition

When racing, at what rpm range do you guys let off the clutch? And when do you shift to 2nd and to 3rd? I need to experiment more at the dragway, but I'm curious what you guys do. Answers from front wheel drive owners would be most helpful.

There is a thing called a powerband, after so high of RPMs your pulling power decreases to the point switching gears is better.

I am AWD, but this is a estimate at which I shift:
1st gear - near redline, at about 6,500RPMs
2nd gear - about 6,000RPM
3rd gear - about 6,500RPM
4th gear - well usually I don't make it to 4th gear in races, but take it as high as I can

If you are running the stock turbo you aren't gaining shit going to redline, thats for sure. T25 only boosts between 3.5RPMs and about 5.5RPMs..going beyond that is pointless, you want to keep that turbo spooled so switching gears would be benificial once the turbo tops out.

This is just my opinion, it works for me and I have lost VERY few races around here.

hes n/t :D , on a reletivly stock 420a I wouldnt go far past 5800-6000 unless you have a good set of cams to make the power after that useful.

I used to have a 420a eclipse... here is the shift points i used.

1st gear- 6000
2nd gear- 6800
3rd gear-7200
4th gear-7200

thats approximately what i used to shift at.

tips- LAUNCH AND NEVER LET OFF OF THE GAS! When you shift just let the tach bounce off of the rev limiter. I usually launched at about 3500 rpms. :thumb:

No offense, but I hope no one listens to you...

tell me that after you try it in a 2gnt. i used to own one..you didnt. I had one for 3 years. I got the best track time from that exact approach. I tried many techniques.

And just where are you getting this information from?

If it is your opinion that people should not use advice given YOU NEED TO EXPLAIN WHY. Please do so.

That said I don't know exactly where you should shift but taking the engine to redline usually isn't the best way in a setup like the 2gnt...but I am not sure.

I can tell you that revving the engine that high will put extra wear on the bearings/rods/etc and probably shouldn't be done too often.

I don't want to kill my transmission. I figured about 3500 was a good time to launch. Were you under 16?

It IS harder on your tranny. I was just posting how i got my best 1/4 mile times..not the best way to save your car..just the best way to get it down the dragstrip the fastest. I had a full 2.5 inch exhaust, ignition wires, header, and a cold air intake. That car NEVER had any tranny problems so maybe i just got lucky. I raced it like this from 60,000 miles to 106,000 miles without ever having a problem. The fastest i ran in the car was a 16.11.

If you are at all serious about your car/setup you should take it to a dyno and see what YOUR power band is. You want to shift when it starts its way down and will bring you right back to the begining of the curve.

Every car is setup different. Get yourself a 3rd and 4th gear baseline and go from that. It is not that expensive if it is just 2 pulls.

This is what I do in the 1/4 m.:

- Launch at 2500-2900 RPM(maybe yo can launch it higher, I havn't do it... ;) )
- In 1st & 2nd gear I hold it up to 6900-7200RPM (or just before the fuel cut)
- I get the finish line at more less 6800 RPM on 3rd gear.

I have a 1991 Talon TSi FWD with free mods + Cat Removed + Open exhaust and MBC at 14.5 - 15.5 Psi, my best time 15.000 (Flat). With out MBC, my best 1/4m time is 15.368 (9-11Psi).

As far as I have read, 1G DSM's can rev so high because the 14B Turbo still pushing all the way until the red line. 2G's are different, Turbo just make it up to 5500-6000RPM's... that's what I know so far, hope this can help you in the drag races!!! :thumb: :talon:

i shift at 6200-6400 because the t25 is a dinky worthless piece of shit. and cant hold boost past 5500! but i am in the process of deciding on a new turbo, and then installing it. after i get my new turbo, i should be shifting at like 6900 or so.

With almost all of the 4G63 engines in the turbo cars in the DSM world boost starts falling off at around 6.5k. It is the reason behind cams and larger turbos. The engine is designed that way and these 2 things are not cures, they are temporary solutions to a permanent problem most of us have.

The 14b might not loose boost till later than the T-25, but I garentee it is not pulling up the curve till 7,500rpm's.

All of this is really pointless though, he is N/T and has a 420a. I do not know the powerband these engines are producing, but the answer I gave above should solve his problem pretty simple. Cost you about $50 to get a "CORRECT 100% PROOF POSITIVE" answer. ;)

The Best thing to do is shift before the redline....like the other guy said after u finish the 2nd gear and going on 3rd just give up because V8's keep pulling....Just shift before redline...also the owner knowz his car better than anyone else so just shift where its good and safe so nothing messes up.... :thumb:

I see all you AWD'ers cutting sub 2.0 60fts. Where are you guys shifting from 1 to 2 at, what rpm? I can't seem to get below 2.0 on my 60fts. Car is pretty much stock. New clutch, new tires. If I shift at redline it seems like my power drops off after about 6500, or is it just me? Or is the shift at 6500 whats killing my 60 ft?

You've already travelled 60' before you get into 2nd gear, so the 1-2 shift has nothing to do with it.

You need to work on your launches if you can't get under 2.0 :thumb:
