When do you shift? [Merged 7-8] points shifting revs point

I think you could hold it in first gear a little longer. Try about 6500 in first gear, but shave a couple of hundred RPMs off of that for your 2-3 and 3-4 shifts. That seemed to give me the best results. However, I have never been to the track. I am basing this off of some highly inaccurate testing methods. Take it for what it's worth I suppose.

I looked around for other posts on this but didnt' see any. What are the proper rpm's to shift at when racing in a n/t? Launch through the 3-4 shift. Also, do shift points change as mods are added. Currently I have a KnN filter and full header back exhaust, will that make much difference in when to shift for max power?

Shift Points...

1st gear: 5800
2nd gear: 7200
3rd gear: 6500 - 7200
4th gear: 7000

got this info off 2gnt!
With the mods you have, I don't think that shifting point would be
higher.

i had a 2gnt with pretty much same mod's as you without the new header

but i had a bigger throttle body intake, gs-t exhaust with 2.25 straight through muffler
some other stuff too...

I tried that shift pattern and it was horrible

Just shift at about 7200 every time.....

I have a 1g TSI AWD and I was just wondering of when are your guy's shift points. I live around all HONDUH guys and they say to just take i t to redline everytime for maxium power. What do you guys do that works well on a 1g TSI AWD. Also what do you guys launch at?

dont listen to the honda guys. the only reason they take it to redline is because that is usually where their power band kicks and ends at. im not too sure wat the shift points for a 1g is since the 1g and 2g turbos are different, but as for the 2g, the t-25 starts choking around 6400rpm and that is when we usually shift at because that is when our power band starts to drop. as for launching, 4500-5000 rpm is a pretty good range. slip the clutch and dont get used to dumping it.

please correct me on some of these things as i am no expert on dsmsOMG

4500 for a fast launch. Slip the clutch quite a bit and you'll get decent wheel spin without breaking your car (just your clutch LOL).

I shift at about 6500 in 1st. 6000 in second. and 5500 from then on. It's probably different for every car though.

Best way to learn how to drive your car fast is to get a turbo timer with a 1/8th mile or 0-60mph timer in it. Just practice practice practice.

i shift at 3k MAXIMUM when i drive the car around town so im not being mean to it. When i race im a redliner, im still trying to learn the launching though, ive been dumping:rolleyes: but ima stop that.

Step 1 - buy a dyno
step 2 - do 1st gear
step 3 - do 2nd gear
step 4 - do 3rd gear
step 5 - do 4th gear
step 6 - do 5th gear

then u know exactly when your power starts going out and exactly where to shift :p

thats the millionare way of doing it...

im not sure if on a dyno its accurate in 1st, 2nd... but who knwos maybe it is

with my '90 i could really feel the car slow down after 5500, so i'd usually shift at 6500 or so, hitting the sweet spot in 2nd, 3rd around 6000...get a bigger turbo, and you will pull to redline:thumb:

Humm..I launch my beast at 4500-5000RPMs in my 95 TSi AWD, I nearly red-line in every other gear after.

Shifting depends on your mods as all of them would move the torque curve around. Cars are usually designed to have optimal shift points at redline when stock. I'd say with a 14b you should shift at or a little before redline, probably before.

If you have money go to a dyno and figure it out from your gear ratios and torque curve :p

I know people with intake manifolds take it up to 8500 rpm

so it def relates to your mods.

but best thing to do is dyno your car in every gear...

Me and my buddy were having a discussion on when to shift our cars he has a 91 Laser non turbo, FF and I owe a 92 Laser Turbo AWD. Anyways he says he likes to gun it off the start and bring it close to redline each time he shifts, while I like to bring mine up to around 3,500 4,000 for each shift.... I was just wondering what the ideal rpm to shift at would be?

Why would you only bring your car to only 4k rpm when your racing? Your not taking advantage of the power you have if your just shifting at 4k rpm

You should go redline or near redline, if you are shifting at 4grand you aren't getting your cars complete potential...plus when you shift you lose your power because the RPMS drop.

So I like to go to 6500 to 7K on mine

You want to stay in the powerband when racing. If you're completely stock then you probably start running out of steam a little before the redline. With proper modifications, you should be able to hit the redline for optimal shifting. 2Gs are different because the boost starts to drop off around 5.5K. It's good to shift 2Gs at more like 6K.

The type of turbo you have would be a good indication of where you need to shift. Stock turbos die off at higher RPMs so a shorter shift would be needed. If you have something larger with performance directed at high RPMs, shift higher. But remember if you go too high, you can float valves on a stock head.... And your tranny doesn't like anything too high either!
