Here's the deal, I've searched for the last 45 minutes on here and can only find a question from a 1G owner asking about the wheel bearings. I'm a 2G owner and have read that taking the front bearings off these things can be a major pain in the @$$ to get to. Am i correct in hearing this? I've read you have to take off the tie rod, strut and then finally pull the axle out to get the bearing off. Is this going to take hours to get one off. I have a buddy who has done it before and he said it only took an hour or so to do. that was taking the old one off and putting the new one on. But..........That was on a 98 Blazer. Just want to know if i will be planning for a full 8hr day to do both or if i should just pay a mechanic to play with these things. I'm in Milwaukee, so if anyone here knows of a good person i'm always open for suggestions. If there actually was a posting on this, I'll even take a link to see where it was.

Oh those axle nuts i broke 2 breaker bar and 3 extensions. I just bought a pipe that i can slide over the breaker bar and used a 6" extension with a jack stand supporting the extension so it's perfectly leveled. Search axle nut dsm on YouTube. Once that's removed it should be easy to do the rest. Remember if u take out the tire rod mark it so you know how far to tighten it back up.
 
It all depends if you have the right tools the bearing is forced in so it need to be forced out with a shop press

not if your replacing the hub assembly. then its just remove and install. Pressing the bearing out and installing another bearing in the same hub is a waste of effort.
 
I'm just getting the whole wheel bearing hub assembly. I'll pay the $30 bucks extra to get the whole thing and not just the bearing. Might as well replace the whole damn thing since i'll have it apart. I just wanted to know if i still had to take the strut and tie rod off to get to the thing. and if i needed to have plenty of asprin handy as well from me beating my head against the side of the car because i cant get it out. LOL

alright cool. at least i know its going to be as much as a pain as i thought. Like i said before, i read it could be a monster to do. And with my buddy doing his 98 Blazer in about an hour i just assumed it would be harder on these lovely DSM's. ha ha

You'll smash the shit out of the end of the axle to the point where the axle will never slide through the hub even if you do get it free.
 
Why do you assume that the strut has to come off, it doesn't. You can get away with just removing the axle nut, remove the caliper with bracket and hanging it from the strut, remove rotor, pop the upper ball joint loose swing spindle out and slide the axle out, remove 4 bolts, hammer old assembly out, and assemble in reverse order.

By the way some people are talking about pressing in a new bearing to the assembly that is not even possible, the inner race is part of the outer housing and can not be removed. .

Thats why i assumed it needed to be removed. Unless my tired butt just read too much into it. Or the person who posted that was wrong

I was kidding about smashing it with a really big hammer. I've worked on other cars to know that you have to be careful. Just never changed a wheel bearing before.

Who ever posted that link has never worked on a 2g. They said to remove the strut from the knuckle. The strut is not bolted to the knuckle on the 2g. The strut attaches to the lower control arm.
 
Thank god. I showed my buddy that link and his words were "Wow, that might be a bi*** to do on your car". Like i said prior, he has done them before but it was on a Blazer. So that's why i asked this question. I'm glad to know it wont really be as bad a previously expected.
