Whats needed for 350hp on 10.5 CR

I think you meant "where you could retard the spark timing" (decrease the the amount of timing advance). :)

A common number used for AWD DT losses is 20%. How accurate that is, I couldn't tell ya...but I know my car has some pretty high DT loss. For a 20% DT loss and a 350awhp target, it would require 437.5 HP at the crank to get there. Granted, I have no idea what DT the OP's friend is planning on running.

Using a less conservative 10% for DT loss would require 388hp at the crank. Even that number is hard to achieve without some serious cooling of the fuel charge with a small turbo pushing 20psi or more with CR = 10:1. With 8:1 pistons + FMIC + WAI... it's still a battle to get 350awhp with any small turbo on the frog piss we have around here.

Calan gotta remember this is a FWD 420a platform. I don't think everyone in this thread has realized he's boosting a 420a. I also still don't understand how you plan on running a mitsu flanged turboed, let alone your original plans for a e316g?

I haven't completely forgotten that, but cylinder pressure is cylinder pressure, no matter what the configuration.

I'll be the first to admit that I know nothing about 420a specifics though. :)

Well I know he is, but I didn't see anything about what his friend is going to be running...and that is who he is talking about using the 10.5:1 CR. In fact, I don't think he even mentioned if his friend is also on a 420a unless I just missed it. :)

Regardless of that, the only thing it will affect is DT loss calculations. He'll still have to deal with high cylinder pressures when trying to pump 20+psi of boost into a 10.5:1 CR chamber.

:D Hey I told you my brain hurt! Yes retard the timing.

By the way just to be clear, I was not saying the OP should buy that small of a turbo. I believe that you should by the right turbo for the right HP goal, that means size and trim are a consideration along with your mods. Whatever you do you don't want to run a turbo to it's max in MO. I also would like to point out that my calculation was at the crank and its just a rough calculation so if you want to hit your goal shoot high. That being said I think the OP should just take it slow and get to 8psi first and then try to build up to his 350Whp goal gradually.

Ok today i talked to him a little bit about looking into finding pistons in the 9. compression area if he wants a little more power but were mostly gonna do 8.8:1 and boost the hell out of it, We made a trip to toledo and bought the car today, as soon as i get mine back together ( damn bent valve) which should be starting tomorrow im gonna start to rip his apart.


What all was used to run that much power?
20g and up turbo
walbro 255lph
megasquirt
fmu or sfmu
injectors?

A couple ideas would be better then taking a shot in the dark. LOL

Hey just to point this out the OP got the point that a high cr piston would be more work and he and his friend decided to go with the 8.8 like a smart person which is good because its easier to run a higher boost and you only suffer a 5% power loss between the two cr's.
 
Well god damn, that hurt my brain there. LOL. But yea its a 420a. Its gonna be completely built from top to bottom and then boosted. What I am asking is what will be needed to support this whole 350hp goal. sfmu? fmu? fpr? megasquirt or hahn portfueler? Sorry, I got the whole building process down, now just gotta get the tuning and turbo path down. :)

Well the portfueler is an option, however, 400hp is its max with a 16g at the crank so probably just over you goal at 350whp. It is an easy alternative to the magasquirt option but it is more expensive. MS is hands down the best way to run a 420A that is seeing boost levels above 8psi, however, it is hard to install and takes a lot of work to tune it. I have seen a ton of portfueler for sale in these forums from people looking to get a better tune with the MS. So... pick your poison.
 
I would personally go with MS over portfueler. MS may be a little bit harder to install, but there is a detailed write up with pictures on 2gnt and there are many knowledgable people to help you out.
