What to do now

I just got everything together to try and start my car, it's been sitting for years. I tried starting it and discovered I wasnt getting fuel. I pulled my pump and discovered something pretty bad(see pic). What should my next step be, I really don't want to drop the tank if I dont have to. Do I need a new assembly?

Man if that is rust your gonna need to clean the heck out of the tank to keep a new pump from picking up the same crud. You might be able to do it in the car, how long and skinny are your arms . But seriously, you don't want a new pump picking up that stuff. When you look down in the hole where the pump was mounted how bad does the tank look?

Yea with that much rust that tank is going to need to be cleaned and sealed. It happens to old motorcycles a lot. I just take the tank to a radiator shop and have them do a acid treatment and a sealer witch makes a new coating inside. Had it done to 3 CBR's including my current one. Good luck man rust sucks.

The inside of the tank didn't look bad at first glance, I need to get a mirror to look around better. Can I clean the fuel pump hanger or do I need a new one?

If it's not rusted through it can be cleaned but the fuel level sensor may be toast.
