well its tax time and I figure I will put some money into my gsx I just bought. I am new to DSM's/turbos. I plan on having it dyno tuned and I want to make sure I have everything all squared away to be able to make the most power SAFELY with what I have before bringing it in for a tune

here is a list of mods I have so far

  • a brand new 16G turbo with ported turbine housing
  • exhaust manifold and O2 housing from and Evo3.
  • 2.5inch SS downpipe and highflow cat.
  • HKS Dragger exhaust
  • ACT 2100lb clutch
  • Greddy Profec B boost controller (installed on car)
  • greddy profect e-01 boost controller (not installed)
  • greddy type s blow off valve
  • S-AFC2
  • auto meter egt, narrow band a/f and boost gauges

I plan on getting rid of the narrow band and picking up an aem Uego Wideband. also I think I will need bigger injectors (I have been looking at picking up a set of stock evo (560cc) injectors will this be enough? also what should I do for a fuel pump will I need to upgrade the stock pump?

is there anything I am missing/do you guys have any suggestions?

also I don't know if this matters but the head gasket is new and arp head studs were installed when it was replaced

Upgrade path will help get the correct mods wideband more fuel a 190 then a tuning device loggerr, dsmlink something before you go thinking about safely the tuning devices are there for a reason. So to make this helpful and easy get the mods first. You dont need a egt, get a wideband not the blinky light. Get those things first. Wideband before safc thats for fuel, Get some sort of tuning device so you can see whats going on. Spend the money wisely and go from there.

i suggest bigger then evo injectors, 650s at least or bigger, for future growth, might want to get a 255lph fuel pump and adjustable fuel pressure regulator

I'm not understanding what you are saying. I know I will need a wideband and plan on picking that up. as far as the tuning device isn't that what the safc2 is for? I already have the EGT gauge (all the mods listed came on the car when I bought it)

Yeah, but you need something to "log" the data or record and store it while you drive.

I am a noob... LOL I know this is probably a dumb question but why would I need to log data when I am just driving around?

Evo scan cough cough. Sell safc and get OP cable and run ecu flash and ceddy mods. And you're set.

whats wrong with the safc? do you happen to have a link to that stuff?

which boost controller would you guys recommend me using... greddy profec b or e-01?

SAfc nothing never used it link the way, egt ok to have but wideband does the job better its a tuning device get a wideband log to see whats going on driving around. mbc its your choice so many, hallman, turbo xs, lots take look out there.

evo scan what ever that is need to run it dont know, my link is coming as soon as i get my tax return.

  • a brand new 16G turbo with ported turbine housing good
  • exhaust manifold and O2 housing from and Evo3. skip
  • 2.5inch SS downpipe and highflow cat. good
  • HKS Dragger exhaust good
  • ACT 2100lb clutch get 2600 your awd
  • Greddy Profec B boost controller (installed on car)
  • greddy profect e-01 boost controller (not installed) your choice of mbc
  • greddy type s blow off valve crap
  • S-AFC2 ok for now
  • auto meter egt, narrow band a/f and boost gauges skip narrowband

You can raise the boost quite a bit since you have arp studs, something like 25 with the 16g. If this is so then you'd want larger injectors and a pump, a 255 with a afpr and call it a day.

+1 for the wideband and logger.

Injectors, walbro 190lph fuel pump, and if you are having someone else dyno tune the car like a shop that is very familiar with DSMs you won't really need a logger because they probably have one to use while tuning, same goes with the WBO2. Other than that it really depends on how much boost you plan on running. If you plan on maxing that 16G out then maybe some good cams (fp2s, 272s, etc) ARP head studs, a fresh head gasket possibly metal, large injectors, 255lph fp, and ECMLink V3.

I will be having a shop dyno tune my car.. they seem to have quite a bit of experience with DSM's.

I have another question I found this tucked in the dash behind my cd player it is connected to the profect b boost controller... its some kind of switch any idea what is it for?

Any shop can tune it but when you leave the shope you need a way to see whats going on and why i could have my car taken to a shop and then leave. And oh i can boost this amount forever tuning devices allow you to see problems before they happen. When i leave the house i have everything i need to tune the car, shops arent always around nor am im paying someone to fix what i can. just my opionon.

so pretty much what I have gotten out of this is I definately need a wideband A/f gauge, 750cc injectors, hp fuel pump. f/p regulator and the SAFC is ok for now but if I go with larger injectors I will need another form of tuning ie: dsmlink, Evo scan or something along those lines.

what do you guys think I would be looking at as far as hp/tq goes with the mods I have + bigger injectors, fuel pump and tune?

I'm really not looking to make a ton of power or spend a ton of money. I just want to really get the most out of what has already been done to the car. I figure if I put a little money into it and make it a little faster and just as reliable why not considering I bought the car for 1300.00 with all the mods.

safc max out at like 650cc injectors. if you plan on running bigger, get dsmlink. i would get dsmlink regardless as there is so much more you can do with it. if you plan on getting the evoscan, you need to have the "blackbox" ecu from the 98 and 99 eclipses. if you dont have it, it wont work. since you got a 97 i'm gonna assume you dont have it. just dsmlink v3 or the dsmlink v3 lite version. either or works. much more tunning capabilities. and look for the evo 3 16g. great turbo choice. but like i said, throw away the idea of safc with anything more then 650cc injectors.

for hp numbers and stuff, it depends on the boost level and how well the tune. cant give a number. with a 16g easy over 250 hp.

and if you just got this car, have you done all the maintenance and make sure it runs up to its tip top shape? just asking, because some people jump into things way to fast, if you know what i mean. :)

ok so I will go with 650cc injectors. for some reason I thought the SAFC was good for up to 750cc but I must have read wrong.

I'm planning on just sticking with the safc2 since it came with the car I don't want to spend to much $ for now and the safc will work to get the most out of the mods for the time being.

other than what has been done = timing belt, water pump, head gasket/arp head studs, changing all fluids, and spark plugs what other maintenance would you recommend?

i could be wrong, but i am almost positive they're useless after 650 as safc cant control them. its your choice, but anything over 650 id go with link. i would use 560s to 680. 680 might be too big. i know people use 560s and they work great. but 750 is defiantely too big. 680s should be fine. if not gm maft it and it'll be good.

yeah sounds like what i would do. already there, might as well utilize it. ha

and that seems good, just boost leak test if not and you should be good.

That's. Something I have been meaning to ask about....what is a boost leak test(I know its a test of the Turbo system to check for leaks but how do you perform the test?

you can make the boost leak tester out of pvc pipe and stuff. search it for the exact stuff you need. if you go on youtube their is a video that shows how to make the tool and test it out. what it does is pressurize the system like if you were under full boost and you can then check your vacuum lines, bov, couplers, tb, injector o rings and such for leaks. if it is leaking you are losing power, basically.
