What makes the apexi sound the way it does? Is it the actual can part of the exhaust?

I have a big 16g waiting so I'm thinking to do exhaust soon. I like the sound of the n1 but I would want to get something other than a big can sticking out the back of the car :D

I'm looking to get something that sounds like this (at 11 seconds)

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q-SOMtYmjsQ?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q-SOMtYmjsQ?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Save the money and get an ebay exhaust doesn't sound ricy at all. Has a nice aggressive sound I have an ebay 3" turboback couldn't be happier. I see you live in cali I wouldn't get a loud exhaust I know cops here are dicks

K2 motors has a decent N1 style that I have it's a tad long by maybe 1/2" - 1" just enough to make connecting my Megan downipipe setup a little tricky but a little fabbing should fix that I love it and they sell their stuff outside of ebay as well I got my dash gauge bezel from them and looks great

If it was just resonators then I could use any muffler I wanted right?

Hurricane: thats the big reason I was asking. I was thinking of going with one of those mufflers with the butterfly valves in them to be able to switch from quiet to that sound in the vid

GIRman: thats the thing is that I wanted to stay away from the n1 style. I was just wanting to get the sound and use a stock looking muffler

One thing about that video that I noticed that wasn't mentioned about is that it was recorded in what appears to be a parking garage. Even a stock exhaust sounds a bit deep in them places because it echos like crazy.

The Apexi N1 muffler has a resonator to reduce the raspy sound that it gives out. The E-Bay N1 style has a resonator on it but its just a perforated tube in a steel shell with no filling to deaden the noise as well as the Apexi's mesh filled resonator does. The facts of buying an item still stands. You get what you pay for.

Try getting a pacesetter or a magnaflow muffler that resembles a stock muffler pack. They have some deep tones that will allow your exhaust to breathe the amount it needs to for your setup your getting with.

i think this eclipse got some cams to..you are not going to sound like this']

I think somewhere in the comments he said it was all stock except for k&n filter, bov, and downpipe

It's not so much the deepness that I'm after, its more the tone and beefiness

Here's another:

Killa_dsm: That sounds pretty good to me.

Video's like this one make me wonder if it even matters what kind of muffler I use. Skip to :45

I have a 3" custom turbo back exhaust with a 3" cat and a dynomax muffler. It's pretty deep and mellow. It's pretty quiet actually. You can see that the muffler part is tucked under the car a bit more than on most DSMs. I bought it from someone on here a while back.

Look into getting a Magnaflow muffler. VERY NICE note out of them. Loud and deep.

I'm using a 3" single in dual out oval at the rear and mid pipe its a 5" round can (Magnaflow also) I'll try to get a video posted in a little bit.

The resonators and muffler have an effect on the sound. I run a 3" Tsudo N1 cat-back with a 3" catless downpipe. It only cost less then $200 shipped if I remember correctly and fits and sounds great. I would not spend any more then that especially if you plan to replace the muffler anyway. Why cut up part of a $500 exhaust when you can get one for under $200 to do it to.

Anyway here's a video of mine:

I have a non turbo with the N1 with the silencer which like but may not be necessary without a turbo. The active silencer I have is interesting how it should allow for more air flow with more pressure but still be suiet at a stop but its not completely silent and the silencer can be removed for more air flow.

The quality sound is going to come from quality welding. Cheap any part is going to sound cheaper. A cheap resonator with a quality muffler wont sound as good nor will a quality resonator and cheap muffler.

The only negative is that mine sticks out and it is not an easy fix and it does not scrape surprisingly so I have moved on and it looks nice kind of.

The restrictions and the blown out muffler contribute to the sound of the N1. Get something else.

Got a video of mine

I personally think the N1 exhaust is JUNK, I have a Megan downpipe with a custom 3" catback exhaust with no cats or resonators and no neckdowns etc to a Magnaflow 3" in - 3" out race muffler and it sounds tits. Not like any other DSM I've heard(except Diambo's because hes pretty much running the same exhaust LOL

Shut up about the fingers in the camera LOL

I use an ebay 3" downpipe, ebay 3"cat-back(no cat, but has 2 resonators". and Magnaflow 3" in and 3" out. Sounds really good IMO. The ebay muffler was horrible. It sounded nice at idle and up to 2500rpm the when you gas it, :barf:

I have an exhaust shop custom 3" turbo back with an apexi n1 muffler and it sounds great. I used to run a straight 3" with no cat, or muffler, and the apexi muffler is so much quieter, especially for a large straight through.

I have a full Apexi N1 exhaust and 2 resonators in the cat-back. I love the power gain difference, but the only thing for me is that ITS TOO LOUD even with the resonators in place. I don't like the attention my car gets from police here :( Well here is a video of it just idling

new N1 catback runs what? $750-$800? what kind of HP gains are you looking at? 8-12hp? 8-12 hp (or whatever low number it may be) just doesnt justify the price of it.
