I am pulling my motor out of my TSI AWD and I am getting really close to getting it pulled out..to make some more room I removed my ABS hydralic and took out the battery tray and I notice some lines comming out of a can shape thing that has a line running to where the intake used to be and a couple of other smaller lines running around the engine..what is this for?..is this somthing that can be removed? because I have seen pics of engine bays without those lines that run up to the throttle body and they have them blocked off and i was just wondering if I can do the same thing, and what else I can remove that isnt needed..Thanks ~Dustin

so you're all for the removal mybeatgsx?

Absolutely. And if I had more time I'd go into my rant about how useless emissions decives really are (except the cat). Maybe I can find this post I made on another site about that...

sweet, out it comes. I've already got the hose just venting and i havn't noticed one difference in mileage. Except when it went up because of my exhaust.

Here's a little quasi-experiment for ya. I did 450cc injectors, and a manual ecu into my a/t the same time i did an uicp and intake. The intake did not have return lines for the VC or evap. So, breather goes on the VC, and the evap line just chills. My mileage has gone up considerably, even from when it went of before from exhaust. Sooooooo, now that i can't hook this evap up anyway, away it's going to go. And i'll plug the line from the tank so i shouldn't even really lose anything from there.

What is the big black plastic cylinder that has big and little vac lines going into it, is it the charchol thing for emissions or whatever it is for is it needed can I take it off, Im in the middle of taking off all the stuff on my car that is not needed the car is going to be a track car only. So im trying to take off all the stuff I dont need. Thanks in advance

It is the charcoal canister that stores fuel vapours untill they are sent back through the intake into the engine. On a racecar I would yank it for sure.

Is there a tech article or vfaq on how to take this off?

Not really, but once you get all the vac lines off there is only a metal strap that holds it on. you may have to remove the brackets above it as it will not drop down below through the tranny area.

Ok got the canister out, what should I do with the line that ran into it, just cap it off????

If I'm not mistaken you connect the two hoses.

I have to agree with JayRolla, that talon if beautiful! :thumb:

Yea I would do that but aparently when the local mits. dealership put my motor in my car they decided to only have one of the big hoses going into the canister and the other line vanished??

That will be fine. You'll smell gas under the hood now, but don't worry about it.

That's basically what I did with mine and I don't have any fumes in the engine bay. If you cap it, you simply won't have pressure relief through the line anymore and you may end up pressurizing the gas tank.

I'd just cut it shorted and let it breathe.

Good luck,

Andy

Thats a good idea about cutting it short so it breaths under the car instead of in the engine bay. I hate the faint fumes under the hood since it always makes me think I might have a fuel leak somewhere.

There's about a 1" diameter 1-way valve that's on the hose coming from the tank to the canister. Just cut the hose short and re-attach the valve. That way it releases the pressure when it needs to, and the tank isn't just open to the engine bay letting out gas fumes all the time. :thumb:

Actually its the Charcoal Cannister. If you follow the line off of it, it should lead to your intake pipe. Most people just choose to cap it off whenever they buy a new intake pipe. So you should be fine.

If your gonna pull the lines you might as well remove it all together and follow taboo's vacuum diagram on here on how to do it properly.

If all your solenoids are removed, then the charcoal canister is just dead weight.
Its safe to remove, cap off the fuel tank vent line.

Ok Dave, got a question for you being as how you have a '99. I've got a '99 GSX I'm working on and apparently it has a much different emissions setup than my '95. Where my charcoal canister was on my '95 is nothing but vac lines and a couple little bulb things. But they go to two vac. lines that go forward, across to the driver side, and then to a black box. Is that black box the charcoal canister on '99's?
Edit: Nevermind... posted too hastily. After searching a bit further I found the other thread you guys were in about the black box. I shall go remove it now.

^^^^This is true because if you cap it off you will have high pressure in your fuel tank. What I did with my 1G is take out the canister and lines then with the remaining piece i bent it so it looked like an upside-down u. This way no water can get in and it will vent safely down to the ground instead inside my engine compartment.
