I found a 1996 Spyder GST for $4900. It is a 5-speed, 91,000 miles on it, white with black top, 17 inch rims. There is 80% tread left on the tires but the guy has a brand new never used set of tires for the car that is included in the price. He says the top doesn't leak, but it had a rip and was repaired, but he didn't like it, so he bought a brand new oem top that isn't installed and is included with the car. He says the interior is really nice, everything inside works, but you have to help the top up a little bit. He doesn't know if the timing belt has been replaced or not. It has a 3 inch cat back exhaust, 16G turbo, apexi intake and a greddy bov. He says it runs great and has no issues. He says he just wants to get rid of it because he doesn't drive it and its taking up space in his garage, which sounds good to me because he kept it garaged at least. he also said that the paint is good on it, no clear coat coming off, no body damage or dents. I'm going to check for crankwalk be looking at the clutch pedal when I turn left. I have been talking to the guy over the phone and I'm suppose to go drive for 4 hours to go and buy it if it checks out on Thursday. Does it sound good? Should I ask him or check for other things on it?

In that condition maybe 500-800 bucks at the most.

237xxx+ miles? Needs new transmission? Mold in the interior? MAYBE worth 500-700. MAYBE.

I wouldn't buy it but that is just my opinion... If you want a restoration project, by all means go for it.

Whatever the choice, save that precious black leather.

LOL, ya he really let it turn to shit. he bought it for $21 000 or something around there and i think he's looking to get like $4000 for it if he ever fully commits to selling it and cleans it up so i doubt he'd sell it for that under a grand.

it's 237 xxx kilometers

I just have one thing to say, my dad would give me that thing just to clear up space for his other bullshit...

That being said, if it is molding on the inside it is also rusting... Floor pans, trunk, seams etc are all just rotting away every day of the week. And if is has mold, it will smell like ass if you just "clean up" the interior. Plus it could be a health hazard. I mean who wants to slowly die from airborn mold spores in a rotting DSM?

Id offer him a deal to just tow that hunk out of his life and suck up the price tag from a decade ago (with 200,000+ miles, he got his investment back). This is also assuming you dont live at your parents house, if you do, offer to tow it to a friends house , haha.

EDIT:
I just looked at the pics again... Just from the pictures I see a $5k project... tell your father it should be free because of this:

It needs (at the least)
transmission, tune up, interior (carpet at minimum), new rag top, paint job, new brakes all around, most likely 75 to 100% of any rubber line under the hood replaced (rot), fuel tank cleaned, injectors cleaned, new tires, battery, timing belt, all belts for that matter... at this point you have bought two running cars and wonder "why the F$%^ did I start this?" Then you finish it up about 9k later and sell it for $2500... sounds like a deal at $4000 haha.

Just lay it on thick. Once he sees some pricing of parts and labor in his head he will cave. And if anybody gave him $4000 for that Id call the cops on your pops, because that is in fact daylight robbery.

wow, that changes my mind, LOL. he doesn't want me to have it either as he wants to downsize on the amount of cars we have and i already have two other ones. i'm also only 17 and still live with my parents so towing it away is out of the question. guess it's not worth buying which sucks since it brings back some memories. thanks for the feedback.

I'm gonna say no. That's a lot of "customization" and not all of it is tasteful. Actually, a lot of it is pretty distasteful, IMO.

He's got a big turbo on it, but there's not mention of a lot of supporting mods (DSMlink would be a huge plus). Plus, he's running cat-less, which means it's sure to fail smog until you get that fixed (if you live in an area that does emmissions testing). It's a big fixit ticket in any case. That body kit/blue interior is a bit gaudy. Plus, it's got the "Turbo" badge off of a Beetle... :barf:

If you like the car how it is, then that brings the value up a bit. If not, then most of it is a huge deduction.

It's a GS-T. I'd pay maybe $4-5k, if you like the appearance mods.

In my humbled opinion, I would part it out if you actually want closer value from it. You've got a lot of expensive parts in there you just wouldn't get money back on if sold as an entire package. Plus, if there's no receipts or pictures/proof, it's gonna makes things harder. Some people that want a cool/fast car don't want to buy something they have no idea how to maintain. Flipside, experienced people don't want to buy a built car, they want to buy stock and build it themselves. Sucks, but that's the usual two situations. However there might be exceptions I suppose.

When I decided to build my car, I did it knowing it would be a car that stays in the family for a long time. I knew if I sold it this way I wouldn't get nearly the amount out I put in and the car would probably get stripped and rebuilt the way the next owner wanted it anyhow. Basically, I knew I was pissing in the wind on this one but the idea was/is, -I'm young, dumb & single, no bills, and working 60 hours a week in the oil fields. I wanted to have a memorable blast of a car before I wise up and get settled down

Im purchasing a 1G gst on friday and im wondering what are some of the things to look for as far as warning signs. The car has 140k on it and for mods just a 2600 ACT and a downpipe. Any tips would be appreciated

No. Unless he has receipts or pictures of the build. Judging by the cheap price, and lack of information I'd say he's pulling your leg.

well im asking 6000 for it on craigslist iv got alot more than that in it

I know it's been said before, but an automobile isn't an investment. You're never going to get money out (or even back) by putting money into it, with only a couple of exceptions. It's certainly not going to go for above blue book just because you've modded it.

Blue Book for a 94 GSX in excellent condition (meaning like new, just rolled off the lot) is about $3200. With less than 100 mi on the motor, it will need to be broken in too.

You might be able to find a "bought, not built" type of person who wants a fast DSM, but doesn't want to put the time into building one. But most people looking for a DSM are looking for a fast, fun, reliable (read stock) DD, or they want to build it themselves.

If you're looking to sell it, then putting a new coat of paint on and fixing any little mechanical issues will probably pay off. But adding parts (performance parts, appearance parts, etc.) will never increase the value of the car. At worst, it may even decrease it.

So I went and checked out the car hes asking 3k but when I looked at the car the BOV. was blocked and not conected he stated the rubber re circulation hose broke so he blocked it. What kind of problems could that cause?
