I found a 1996 Spyder GST for $4900. It is a 5-speed, 91,000 miles on it, white with black top, 17 inch rims. There is 80% tread left on the tires but the guy has a brand new never used set of tires for the car that is included in the price. He says the top doesn't leak, but it had a rip and was repaired, but he didn't like it, so he bought a brand new oem top that isn't installed and is included with the car. He says the interior is really nice, everything inside works, but you have to help the top up a little bit. He doesn't know if the timing belt has been replaced or not. It has a 3 inch cat back exhaust, 16G turbo, apexi intake and a greddy bov. He says it runs great and has no issues. He says he just wants to get rid of it because he doesn't drive it and its taking up space in his garage, which sounds good to me because he kept it garaged at least. he also said that the paint is good on it, no clear coat coming off, no body damage or dents. I'm going to check for crankwalk be looking at the clutch pedal when I turn left. I have been talking to the guy over the phone and I'm suppose to go drive for 4 hours to go and buy it if it checks out on Thursday. Does it sound good? Should I ask him or check for other things on it?

So I've owned an Evo VIII with a gt35r turbo and plenty of other stuff. Unfortunately, I needed to downgrade so I sold the evo. But Im still itching for some AWD fun.

I found the 92 laser with a good amount of go fast mods....I figured Id ask the experts and see what you all think...
500 HP DSM 92 Plymouth Laser

He has reciepts, and it was built at a shop, not in a garage. I know buying a built car is somewhat scary, but the worst that could happen is something breaks and I can either part it out or rebuild it to my taste. Not a 2g fan at all, i like the older look.

You get a better deal buying a built car then doing it yourself that is assuming that what's listed is actually there. If you do the math on what is listed for parts on that car it will probably add up to more then the asking price of that car.

that may be true but only if the guy doing the work is someone who knows what theyre doing..thats why its a gamble.

Its not fun buying a build car. Its buying a broke down, rusted, not running, car looking thing and making it into a rocket. Thats fun...:) Thats just my opinion ofcourse.

But from the looks of it, the person who is selling it got a lot of money invested in it, and 6500 will not cover all the parts he got in it. I'll give him 5000 cash for it. He'll take it.

not if its your daily, like in my case ROFL

Have to look that he's prob pumped in twice as much than the $6500 asking price (making him a loser in a way), which you would have if you bought a shell and worked up from the bottom up to build it up to this Laser ...

Plan on new tires though - he's prob beaten those that are on all to crap. Maybe the clutch as well since he's already whipped on it pretty good along with flywheel...

...and the dreaded 'crankwalk' with that heavy clutch on it...

He say's he's mustered the needed power out of it where we know that's a lot of wear and tear on any vehicle.

EDIT: maybe that's why he's unloading it even though he say's he's done with the DSM world..

..still though, quite a bit of money for a 19yr old chassis where even Kelly's or NADA won't even come close to his asking price.

Thing that can be real scary is: Let's say that the OP did purchase this vehicle at this $6500 price and it did perform as posted..can the OP get his money back out of it if he decides to sell it, since there will be added maintenace and parts needed-like tires, maybe a clutch,et.al.? That's the bottom dollar in all of this, and obviously, does the OP want to be a loser as the original seller?

..and sad, any vehicle that isn't labelled as a classic or collectors, will never have the return value when purchased.

Yet, as the one above mentioned: Flash a $5000 bill in his face and see if he'll bite. He'd be a bigger fool if he turned that one down.

Yeah I was planing on trying to get it for 5000-5500 range. Like I said he has reciepts for the work and parts, so thats always a plus. And if I see anything bad, I will walk away.

ok i think this is a pretty good deal. 132,XXX, needs a jump to start and drive just because it has been in storage for a bit. Guy wants 1300 bucks, really the only things needed he said would be a new clutch but the one on it is fine for conservative driving, he says it slips at full boost. It would be a pretty good project. Wish i could get it but the wife said no :(.

That's my old car.

PM me, I can tell you a lot about it.

I will say some of that ad is false, he completely copied most of my ad and just added a few things/deleted a few things.

I'm the one that ran it at the track.
I sold it to him back in March for $5400
It was not built at a shop, but it was tuned by his buddy at a shop and I believe had the headgasket replaced there. I had just replaced the headgasket prior to selling it but apparently it was still leaking. A shame, but its whatever.
Also seems he had to get the turbo rebuilt, which is understandable.. The FP Green is an awesome turbo but runs out of steam early and is being pushed on that car.. Spooling at 3800-4000 was fun though.
He also seems to of put wheels / drag radials on it which it desperately needed.. It spun all through 1st when I had it on my street tires.

Overall it is a very well built car, it was not built by a shop but by a very knowledgable DSM'er in Iowa. I was told when I bought the car it had dual-in-tank walbros. I personally never had to pull them out, but the current owner called me and said there was only one. He may of added one, but just giving you fair warning.

Overall, when the the guy came and bought it - he seemed a bit new to it all but didn't strike me as dumb or anything, and it seems he has good friends - so I assume the car has been taken care of. It looks like he took the right path with it.

Now is it worth $6500? No. Does it have that much money into it? A huge yes. I gave him the receipt book with the car which I totalled once and it was at around $10,000, not including the cost of the transmission which was not recorded.

It simply isn't worth $6500 due to the fact that 1g's in general don't bring in a lot of money these days. It also doesn't help the car's body condition is piss poor. Lots of paint chips/scratches/dents. The worst part is the drivers rear quarter. Looks like it was hit there and someone did shoddy work. Bondo/Crappy Painting/Cracks in the bondo around fuel door.

When I was considering parting it out, my part out list prices would of totalled $6700 without including the shell and stuff on the shell like suspension / t-case / ecu / fuel pump / FPR / gauges / etc. So in reality parting it out I would of ended up with about $7000 probably - I simply did not want to go through the hassle of pulling parts and trying to ship a ton of stuff every week. I'd say $5500 for it would be fair, just because he did pay $5400 for it and seems had to put a decent bit of money into it and it's probably a lot better off than when I sold it.

There's no reasons it should not run 10's if it's tuned now on the new setup I put on it over last winter.

During the 're-freshening' i did last winter, I also added a few mods.. Car should be ready to run 10's.

So you're calling anyone who puts a lot of money into making their car fast a loser? If so I must be a huge loser, I put a lot of money into my first talon, that laser, and my LS1.

It's called a hobby. You might as well start calling everyone who buys a factory-fast car a loser too.

Plan on new tires though - he's prob beaten those that are on all to crap. Maybe the clutch as well since he's already whipped on it pretty good along with flywheel...
Those tires are actually new since I sold him the car, I gave it to him with stock wheels with about 40% tires on them.
Clutch probably has seen better days, its an ACT2600 that saw about 8-10 launches from me, and one launch that left a big cloud of clutch smoke and the car smelling like clutch for a week after I thought I was in 1st gear an accidentally launched in 3rd gear :ohdamn: I was planning on putting a twin-disc in it anyway.
...and the dreaded 'crankwalk' with that heavy clutch on it...

LOL

I've always loved that Laser.

As an alternative you could always buy my 2G and then I could turn around and buy that laser. Win-Win. :thumb:

For some reason I've had a lot of people tell me how rare the white exterior / red interior 2gb laser is. I personally don't see the big attraction but I have a lot of people I know who especially have commented how much they envy me for having a white 2gb laser, let alone its one of the few 6/4 combo lasers. Afterall, just the AWD lasers are rare in themselves.

Yup. The 2gb laser was pretty damned rare.... I've never seen one, personally.

Guy sure sounds like a winner.

Well I just ended up buying the car for 5500. Parts alone were worth it, so I figured why the hell not. The clutch actually seems to grab alright and it runs pretty good. It hunts a bit to idle sometimes, but I figure thats the cams.

No the idle was always sketchy, I figured it was from not being freshly tuned yet when I sold it. Its probably better now. I was also running a vented tial with a 2g maf. If it's still like that then that could be your problem. What I was going to do was simply upgrade to V3 and use idle air clamp, which allows you to vent the bov without ill-effects.

Glad you got a decent deal on it.

Keep in touch with me, I like to know how my previous cars are doing :)

It also has FP2 cams - tuned properly and running good, you'll never know it has them. The car idled like stock when I had it before i changed the build up.

Some old videos of it I'll throw in.. I didn't take near as many videos of the laser as I did my old talon.

This was right after finishing my new setup over winter, untuned at lower boost.
