What happens when oil sprocket is out of alignment?

hey guys,
I'm still in the middle of my battle get my timing marks right and so far rotating the exhaust cam 1 tooth clock wise doesn't not work for my car :confused:

Anyway,
I got everything to line up EXCEPT for the oil pump sprocket. Why is it that before I turn it 6 times to check, everything is lined up. But once I rotate the engine 6 times, everything lines up except for the oil pump sprocket? I have checked if it's in phase, and there was no slack in the belt.

Any insight?
 
The oil pump [drives a gear which] has a counter balancer [shaft] on it. It takes 6 revolutions for it to re-align with the marks when you are checking tdc. If you are off a tooth or more your engine will have a vibration. If you are not sure, pull the belt, align all your marks and on the oil pump/balancer, remove a bolt in the back of the engine and using a 1/4 inch diameter rod, align the pump pulley. When the rod goes in further and the marks line up you are at the correct placement. Keep turning the pump pulley until you feel the rod go in.

I put the belt on the cams first with them in alignment and clip the belt on.
When I get to the Oil Pump Sprocket, I retard (CCW) it a bit (less than a tooth) to get the belt on and then turn it back to tighten the slack out of the belt between the cams, idler, and oil pump.

At this point the Cams and OPS timing marks should all line up and you shouldn't be able to turn the OPS any farther clockwise without the cams moving.

Same deal for the crank pulley, moving it as needed to get the belt on and over the tensioner pulley, then making sure the marks all line up.

As long as the belt is tight between the cams and the oil pump sprocket you can't wind up later being a tooth off after turning the engine over. It sounds like you were a tooth off in slack to start with between the two.
