what happened to my 2nd,4th and reverse gears?

long story short, i know its probally that cable everyones spoke of, but could someone show me a pic of said items? i do not have the SLIGHTEST idea were to start on my 91 galant VR4. thanks
 
I definetely agree with checking the cables. They come from the firewall across the tranny and bolt to the bellhousing.
 
I would be looking for worn bushings,cables,loose mounting plate.I would also look at the shifter assembly itself since it also has bushings in it. If you are unable to shift into 2nd,4th,or reverse the problem should be pretty noticable once you take a closer look at things.Have a friend go through the gears while you look under the hood for any problems. I had an issue with shifting in those gears when I installed my homemade intake pipe. It is fat and the angle was in the way of the levers from fully extending to the front of the car. All the leavers at the tranny move towards the back of the car for 1, 3, and 5. But they move forward for 2, 4, and reverse. Something could be getting hung up. Just a thought. . .
 
We both have 1990 DSMs. This means we have longer selector arms (which is common term for the linkage at the transmission). The longer arm is an issue for me because I have an intake pipe that comes off the compressor inlet straight for 6 or so inches. . . It's possible. In fact, before I had welded my motor mounts the engine would rock and make shifting into 2 or 4 worse during a run. Not good to miss second after thinking you're going to stick and are prepared to plant the pedal.
