Back in 2010, I bought a 93 TSi AWD. I eventually spun a rod bearing in the summer of 2011. I had planned to rebuild the motor. I stripped the block, cleaned it, checked all clearances, etc. I bought bearings for a 7 bolt as it was a 1G 7 bolt.
When I went to install the bearings, I ran into an issue. The thrust bearing would not fit in the center journal and would only fit in the journal outside closest to the flywheel.
I ended up just rebuilding a 2G block and making custom motor mounts so I could put it in the 1G. Can anyone verify what engine this girdle came from? The girdle I am speaking of is in the top of the picture.
Notice that the journal all the way to the left is the widest journal (though it is difficult to see from the picture). This is the journal that the thrust bearing fit in. All of the rest of the journals only excepted the smaller regular bearings. Also notice there are no grooves like the girdle in the bottom picture.
