Hey, my name is TJ and Im brand new here. I looked through the site but couldn't find the exact answer to this question, but if it is somewhere else, sorry. OK for the queston:
I have a 1992 AWD Tsi. It was built in May of 1992. It has an LSD, and non flip-up headlights, so do I have a 6-bolt motor or a 7-bolt, and do I have a 4-bolt rear or a 3-bolt? Thanks for the help.:thumb:

This is what the 4 bolt looks like compared to the 3 bolt:

When you're looking at the rear end, where the axle goes into the wheel hub area is where you look. Here's the two assemblies side to side:

As far as the 6-bolt or 7-bolt, you can look at the oil pan.

Just slide your hand between the oilpan and frame in the circled area, run your hand up to the oilpan flange under the crank sprocket, and see if the oilpan bumps out towards the driver's side or in towards the passenger side. Out = early (6-bolt), in = late block (7-bolt).

stick your head under the rear of the car and look where the axle meets the wheel hub.
how many GIANT bolts are there on the connecting cup? 3 or 4?

as for the 6bolt, go to the vfaq. there is something visually different about the 6 vs 7 bolt oil pan.

EDIT:
Damn Derek, i wrote half of what you have and you still beat me.
and by the looks of what you posted you beat me BAD
