What does the number 2100,2600,2900 in ACT clutches mean??

A friend is buying a clutch off this one website that shows ACT clutches and Im like get a 2100 clutch but...it has it in the kit number as HDSS?? and I looked up my car on the same site and it has no reference to 2100,2600,2900..so what do these numbers mean? like Stage I,II and III?
 
I believe it is the ft. lbs. of clamping force each pressure plate has. The higher the number the more power it will hold. Also the higher the number the stornger your leg will get from pushing it in.
 
What was the site?

Could have just been the "technical" Model numbers, or that particular company's stock number for the part.
 
Yeah, those are just ACT's model numbers for the different clutches.

Did you need help finding a particular one? I have an ACT catalog I could look up a model number in, if you need it.
 
Ft lbs of clamping force. The 2100 is a good clutch, I just put mine in, and I love it, the pedal feels like stock, and it grabs realll nice, he'll love it, its a good choice.

I thought it was the pounds per square inch of clamping force against the clutchdisk/flywheel, the force in psi the pressure plate exerts against the rest of the clutch assembly. Ft.lbs. is a function of a lever arm and perpendicular force applied to it. :confused: :confused: :confused: . . . . . . .

Haha, I was more referring to his statement of "the higher the number the stronger your leg will get from pushing it in.". Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse anyone. You're correct, though, I've always heard it measured in pounds per sq. inch of clamp force, not ft*lbs. Then again, clutches are not my specialty ;)

The numbers refer to the peak clamp load the pressure plate exerts on the clutch disk and flywheel face. It is measured in lbs of force.

2100, 2600 and 2900 seem to be an old ACT designation, which directly referred to the clamping ability of each pressure plate. (Note that if ACT wanted to change their clamping specs, they'd have to re-number the parts, e.g. 2200, 2650, etc, so it was likely better to use a new description that did not reference clamping load.)

The higher the number, the more force you'd have to exert on the clutch pedal, but this is only true for comparing ACT pressure plates, and only those ones that have the same pivot points and basic design. To illustrate, a pressure plate from a different manufacturer may have a higher clamping load, but less pedal effort due to a different pivot point inside the pressure plate assembly.

FWIW I'm pretty sure the HDSS is the 2100, where as the "xtreme" is the 2600, dont know what the code for the 2900 is though.
 
What DSM-onster and femmedsm said is correct, and it depends on how much power your friend is putting out at the moment or how much he will be putting out, the 2900 is for high power applications, the 2100 is generally for stage1 mods then most people go to 2600 with stage 2 mods, and so on, until you have crazy power like sheps talon and you switch to a twin plate:p :thumb:

Most performance enthusiasts relate more to horsepower numbers rather than torque, but clutch capacity is measured in terms of torque. Think in terms of a high rpm 250hp Honda Civic versus a Ford Powerstroke turbo diesel which has the same horsepower. The truck will need about three times the clutch capacity because the engine produces about three times the torque.

So will a 600 hp honda engine that revs "to infinity and beyond" and has only 250 ft.lbs. of torquen only need say a act 2100? HP is how fast you go from one rpm point to the next or how quickly you use the torque that you have. I agree that torque is the paramount factor in determining the amount of clutch that you need. but a high hp engine will get more done with th torque that it has so that will increase the likelyhood of slipping the clutch, right? Just discussing here.

This is what ACT are telling us. Since the motor only generates 250 lb.ft of torque, this is all the clutch would need to hold back, mechanically.*

However, for your specific example, this is where the manufacturer (not the salesman) should be consulted. The massive difference in the numbers--600 hp and 250 lb.ft--may throw off things. The clutch might not have been designed to handle the heat from more than 350 hp, for example.

600 hp is being transmitted through the clutch, and the losses translate into a lot of heat, which may exceed the rating of the clutch. The manufacturer would likely advise testing the clutch in this application.

For extremely high revs, the over-the-counter stuff might explode. For example, I would check with the manufacturer to make sure the clutch would not disintegrate at the maximum motor rpm.

Torque is the fundamental twisting force that the motor applies to the clutch. This is what the clutch must resist, by squeezing the disk so hard between the pressure plate and flywheel, that slippage does not occur.

Bottom line:
-Worry about torque for selecting a clutch;
-Worry about heating up the clutch for extreme horsepower;
-Worry about blowing up the clutch for extreme rpm; and
-Always check with the manufacturer (not the salesman) for extreme applications, or if in doubt.

This is true if you take for example the Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch. It takes the same or maybe abit less pedal pressure compared to the act 2100 except it has a 2500 pressure plate.
 
Ok I get why there is different amounts of clamping force but what does the disc do? why can I purchase a 2600 with a 4 puck, 6 puck or street disc? The street disc is the most expensive making be believe it may be stronger than a 4 puck or 6 puck?
 
I got a clutch a while ago and I told the guy I wanted a act 2600 and he was like no they are to hard on my hydrolic clutch stuff (he has a 96 gst and he used a centerforce and I guess had problems) So he talked me into his brand of clutch(he owns a clutch store) I think my clutch is an exedy but he said it was good to 400 hp, and I was like well how much torque is it good too. He was like our cars dont make torque so basically dont worry about it. Well the other night I did a launch and it reved to 7k 1st to 2nd then finally grabbed in 3rd. So I am kinda mad. I highly doubt I have 400 hp. So he says he has life time warrenty on parts and a year on labor. So what should I do, do I buy a act 2600 and see if he will install it for free or what.

This is what I thought as well, but I read a post on another forum from a guy at ACT. He said that dsm'ers made up those designations, and ACT has never used them.
