what does the smoke mean?

ok so i finally reassembled the whole engine from a new redone head and started it up. smoke came out of the exhaust and some out of the oil cap when i took it off and some even out of the air filter from the turbo. i did not get new rings and the guy i bought it from said that the rings could be a possibility. it ra like crap and i had to tap the gas the whole time to keep it running. also i heard a clicking noise like there was a rod knocking. what could it possibly be?????????

really hard to tell you without knowing everything about the motor and not seeing it. but if your gonna dump that much money into a top end why not check out the bottom end when it was apart

Could be a bunch of differnt things. You might need to take apart the whole top end and recheck it.

i took the head to a shop and they said that the valves were bent so they redid the head. then i started the reassembly of the whole thing. in my haste i did not pay attention to the pistons or block very much. the guy i bought it from is giving me an extra short block so my plans are to build that short block and drop it in and it should be fine.

white.... i no white means coolant. im not sure what it is

check your compression if its low its most likely your piston rings.

When you pulled the head off did you clean the coolant off the top of the pistons that usually gets dropped in the cylinders and did you properly clean the block surface?

ditto bigal -- if it's white it's coolant (or steam). Sounds like you didnt prep the head/block surface properly. How did you prep btw?

The pistons were clean and had nothing on them

The block surface was clean. i just cleaned off all the excess gasket rub off and cleaned it up. there was not much to clean up tho.
