Took the head back to get the valve seats redone by the machine shop as 9 of 16 failed a flashlight test, nevermind a fluid leak test.. sigh. Picked it up on Friday, found the subpar work done that night, and it proceeded to ruin the entire long weekend I had planned for weeks.
I have not had anything of significance go well for a long time.. car, house, work.. thankfully my marriage still stands.

    Hang in to there!!!!
I keep having "other" projects get into the way of my car work too. Said last night I wasn't helping anyone do anything until I got the motor stabbed into the 92 Auto car. That SHOULD happen tomorrow morning, but Murphy's Law surely will have a say in it! :ohdamn:

Murphy has already screwed with me enough recently.
What I am told is the pilot(s) was/were jacked up and that caused it to not cut a seat concentric to the guide. OK, tools fail. What irritates me is that whomever did the job obviously didnt check the work and it went out the door that way. Just by looking at one of the seats I could tell.. when, on a 3 angle, it looks like a snake eating its own tail, something is very wrong.
Redone and was delivered to my door.
More added fine scratches and blemishes than I would have liked on the deck surface from them reworking it but some of them were undoubtedly from me. Marred an otherwise nice RA20-30 surface but a composite should seal that up fine. Couldnt be any worse than the last job this head saw at what had to be RA50.
Passed my tests for seal and, confirmed by the smell and residue in the ports, they did a solvent leak test.

Slapped on the IM with an uber thin bead of grey RTV on the outer perimiter of the head ports and a light skim on the manifold gasket side
Pulled all but two of the plugs to clean.. not too much residue but theyve never been out. Stripped two of their allen sockets because they just werent budging. Close enough.
Permatex thread sealant on their way back in. Also sealed the -4AN adapter for turbo oil feed in addition to just a crush washer this time. I didnt have leaking issue but this should keep it in place and not back out on me.

I also frankensteined a starter. Bought a new one years ago but it never meshed well with the flywheel ring gear. Not sure if it was the starter gear tolerances or the housing that wouldnt allow it to align.. so I took the starter gear assembly from an old one and married it to the drive motor and solenoid from a new one. Fit together perfectly, and both are Delco Remy. Will see if the new motor obliterates the old gear but it needs some oomph I think.

Drove it :D Fired right up with the new headwork & battery.

On Shell 91 mixed with some old gas from last year still and I have redo the tune from scratch but it fires up within just a couple seconds and pulls a solid 20.4 vac once warm.
The 180 superstat did a nice job dropping the running temp about 6-7C. Opens earlier and flows a LOT more than the old part store piece.

Took a while for three lash adjusters to pump up but some light boostin helped that along. Retorqued new arp studs after a heat cycle.. the felpro 9627PT crushed a bit; got only a couple degrees of extra turn at 90ft.lbs on my brand new 3% tolerance 1/2 torque wrench.

The NT555 in 225 like to find every imperfection in the road and I miss the extra sidewall of 205/55/16..
but there is definitely more traction to be had. B16g still blows them apart in 2nd but I think i'll just have to ease into boost a little better. Right.

oh, and the frankensteined starter was a lost cause. The manufacturing inaccuracy lies in the body of the new Delco Remy unit, not the gear.
Maybe I'll transplate the new guts into the old case.. but the old one still works fine.

One thing that I'm more worried about is that the "old" engine configuration took over a minute to go from 25psi to 10 on a BLT and now I'm 20 to 5 in about 30 seconds. I do have a few small leaks that popped up (even in JB weld that is plugging the TB ports) but only one of those, a nipple tap on the IM, I figure is new since my BLT earlier this year. Don't hear air rushing out, though, and the same crankcase leak for the turbo seals is there. I figure 20-5 in 30 is still OK, but I liked my previous results more.
And the intake valves leaked on that head.

Tossed the FP black on with a fresh set of SS head studs, evo intake manifold, and an AN fitting for venting the block went on today. I'll also be setting up for EMAP logging, so I may tackle that next. Transfer gears should be back from DTR in a couple days and I'll be installing into the trans. Hopefully this will all be do before shootout!

Looking at the first log I have this odd coolant temp spike after acceleration, up 5-6C with little to no boost, and then it drops just as fast shortly after.. dont think I have ever had that before by reviewing last years logs. No coolant is being pushed but will watch it. Perhaps its just better now at drawing heat from the cylinder walls LOL

But, alas, with a victory as big as getting it running this year comes a defeat just as mighty.. the aftermath of someone pulling a 20ft flatdeck tandem axle car trailer and not checking their side mirror when doing a lane change. I was trapped between him and the curb couldnt slow down fast enough before the trailer caught my side. Wheel took some lip damage, both wheel and door took tire impact, and the side mirror busted to pieces from the trailer fender. Second day after getting it up and running and now its back down again for an alignment check, body work, wheel repair, and replacement mirrors, assuming nothing else is wrong with suspension or wheel.

Let's see here, Liberty's Gears transfer gears installed with new trans filter, EMAP logging system put together, timing set, and a very rough mock up of a velocity stack intake (still unsure if this is going to fit). 66703210_2361049547290049_8558449281969684480_n.jpg 66744974_717675508653056_1381866557386260480_n.jpg 66485508_628377694313643_6765601800859942912_n.jpg 66533853_453842795449528_8032149315277291520_n.jpg

    Finally fired her up!

I have a Canadian Talon with the motor from my US car. I got this car cheap with a bad motor. Swapped it, along with a new clutch and driver side axles. Previous owner did some funny sh** to this car. The silver lining id that the bad engine leaked so bad it caked the underside and acted as an anti-rust method. It worked well but it's was a mess and even after power washing it some it still sucked.

The downpipe was broken at the flex section and it looked like a decent exhaust but it was one solid piece from downpipe to muffler. New downpipe on the way and ill probably end up getting a custom exhaust made. Salvaging what I can of course.

This was definitely a case of somebody pushing the stock engine passed its limits and selling it once it broke. Repairs were attempted but they ultimately gave up on it. It has a super cool greddy turbo timer brah.

Anyway, vacuum line clean up soon then boost leak test and base timing adjust. Then to unfuck the interior.

Cut out my crashbeam for FMIC clearance, and while I was at it and it was sooo much fun, I did my son's also....(that was sarcasm about fun....) Both mount up and clear the FMIC so they are ready for install.

Glad to see "neighbors" builds. Hadn't noticed you until the "Okie" thing clicked. I live in KS but actually work in Oklahoma, just north of Bartlesville.
I have A/C for my new shop but it just isn't installed yet, so I am sure we felt that same horrible humidity to go along with the heat wave.
Stay cool and keep up the good work!!!! :thumb:

Replaced the hitch pin clip on my wastegate flapper after it popped off during a very short 2nd gear pull.. (aka blow the tires off)

fk me i thought i popped my motor
then i thought maybe i blew a coupler
then i thought maybe i blew the reference line off my bov

phew, just a clip went walkabout. i miss my old 6cm housing flapper that had a hole for a clip.

Pulled cams and checked all my HLAs, trying to figure out why one or two clack for about 30-45 seconds around a minute after starting cold. Also am suspecting they're causing 2500-3400rpm phantom knock.. or perhaps I just now have a noisy valvetrain with the new springs and retainers.
Nope, all of them are sufficiently pumped, none are collapsed. I did notice I had two types of rockers though, some had smaller oil holes. Quite interesting.
Oh well, put it all back together tomorrow and see what's what.

By the way, ran across this for those that need a new ISC .. save 91% off. 5% rockauto coupon as well. I don't personally know about the brand but that doesn't mean a damn thing LOL
