Hey i was coming home today from visiting my mom (in my jeep) and i park in front of the garage door and then i walk in to my house (never went into the garage or opened it). A couple of minutes of being inside i hear like a loud car outside, so i ask my gf to look who was parked outside she said no one and then she was leaving to go to the bar and runs back up and was like it in the garage. i went out there and i heard my car running then i asked my gf to hit the opener and then the noise stopped. it opened and there was smoke everywhere and the car had been on. i cant figure it out. creeps the hell out of me. anyone ever heard of this or got any ideas seriously im at a loss how my car started and ran in a locked garage with no doors or windows and no keys and it was in the off position!!!

just because you don't have a remote for the remote starter, doesn't mean the car wasn't once equipped with one.

i had this happen to my 240 convertible once last winter. i thought it was pretty strange. so i called the guy i bought the car from and he said that it didn't have remote start to his knowledge. so i had a friend of mine (who worked at a car/stereo/security place) check it out. sure enough, someone down the line had installed a remote start/security system. my friend said it was a horrible system and that i was better off just taking it out. so i did.

anyway, my recomendation would be to take it somwhere that installs remote starts, tell them your story and ask if they'll check it out for you. if you have one on there, it could cause your car to start automatically if it catches a rouge signal of the required frequency to activate it. if it's a decent system, you could always get a new remote for it and start using it.

My freind had a car that would start on its own turned out to be something with a short and the fuses melted togather and were arcing across each other and starting the car. Mabey this is what happened to you car?

I havent had this problem but similar in my tiburon. The aftermarket alarm, did it have a remote start installed? (And also since yours isnt an auto, did it have a piezo switch installed)
I don't know. But I pulled out all the aftermarket wires, and tapes off the spliced ones.
I got the car as a shell, and I don't know the original owner.

I personally havent heard of this problem before. But just a guess of what it might be.

the two terminals on the back of the starter if some how one of the wires connects them both together. in example your power wire is loose and contacts both terminals it will turn your starter over and you wont need your keys in the ignition. if that made any sense.

Nothing was loose. I already checked. Unless they are somehow touching.

I agree the aftermarket alarm was most likely the culpret since the main starter relay requires the key be in the start position to supply power for it to work (even though it has normally closed contacts).

I just noticed it will only happen when you put the key in the on position. Then when you pull the key out, and shut it off. It still turns over a about5or 6 times. When I leave the key in the onn position, it will keep going.

Wow, this is the second thread I've read about today where the car just randomly starts. Is there some supernatural / alien invasion going on this week??? :p

I searched and read that one to..

We had a car come into the dealership I used to work at. It was a 2002 Sebring vert. Car was doing the same thing, it would start for no reason at all. Turned out to be a short in the ignition itself. New ignition, no more problem.

Hey at least yours is only turning over mine actually starts for no reason, i hope you get yours figured out

... This definitely sounds like a wiring issue more than anything else. You need to figure out where your Start wire is shorting to power. Wiring is a PITA so I hope you can figure the issue out quickly. (it's most likely somewhere around the alarm mess that you had.

Exactly...:thumb:

This usually happens on the taps for power and crank, usually located on the ignition harness. Just drop the drivers lower dash panel and check the harness from the ignition key to the car harness. Most aftermarket alarms are tapped here, and when de-installs occur, people just loop the wires back together with butt connectors.

If they're not carefull, there can be little orphan strands of copper wire sticking out of the butt connectors, and these can touch other little orphans, and cause some rather impossible difficulties such as you're decribing...

You might also want to check the starter relay for sticking/burned points.

:tease: Or, your car could be possesed...and you will need a very old priest...and.....

That would probly be the easiest way out. Unfortunetly we never get the easy way out.:D

Im going to checl everything. If it is a relay I have an extra one at my fathers house, to check.

As far as the de-istall.. I cut all the old wires out, and taped off every wire individually where the splices were. But I am going to check for anything comming undone.

I just need to get back off my ass and get started.

Ok so today i went out to the car and it wont start it all powers on it just wont turn over

Before we go any further, define "Turn over" This is the most commonly misued term in a no-start diagsituation, and could lead to days of mis-diagnosis.

If it is truly not turning over, and the starter is not being activated by the ignition solenoid, then I think you have a bad ignition.

I got mine fixed..... I think, i put a new starter in and it started right up. Still dont know what made it run on its own but at least i can start it.

Did you make sure that non of your wiring melted and shorted out...if not i would or it might happen again and cost you another starter.

I looked everywhere and cant find anything, when they tried the starter at napa it gounded like a bunch of gears grinding.
