97 eclipse gs here. Hard to explain the sound... Its coming from the passenger side when I turn the wheel sharp it makes a loud metal on metal sound kinda.. When I straighten the wheel out the sound goes away for the most part other then a whirling sound.

I have a video although not the best but it gives u maybe a idea. U can you hear a slight creaking noise at 16 seconds, then the noise i am talking about at 23 seconds and even louder at 34 seconds... IT will make that noise while the wheel is turned and moving if I turn it back to straight and continue to move the sound will go away after a few seconds and I am left with a whirling/squealing. Ive checked my CV and there is no rips in the boot. I am thinking maybe steering rack?

Lower control arms ball joints.

Inspection may not even turn up any perceived looseness. If it is the lateral arms going out, the noise will likely go away for a time, while the joint eats itself away, but it will likely return with a lot more racket and possibly even failure.

Replace the arms yourself, don't even bother with the dealership. There IS a recall, mind you, for this exact circumstance, but you're best off buying the OEM parts and doing the install yourself. When I purchased mine they were only $33.00 a piece. The price has since risen but I don't think you will find it too exorbitant.

Enjoy :)

If you're getting whirring and squealing though I would lean towards wheel bearings.

Ok ill look into that. This noise only happens when the tire is spinning if that helps at all mainly at slow speeds as I crank the wheel to get out of the drive way.

Thanks for the info ill def check them out.

So what piece is it??? The straight arm piece that has the ball joint attached to it or is there more I need to replace?

I found this at nappa is the correct part I need to replace on both driver and passenger side.

NAPA AUTO PARTS

I suggest buying the oem parts from a supporting vendor.

Well a little update.. I had all ball joints replaced just to be on the safe side.. the noise was still there so I replaced the wheel bearing and no more sounds!!!

Wow next time you need to shake down the front end bro! You would have been able to tell what was bad the first time instead of just throwing parts at it and hoped it would fix it. Gotta learn to diagnose these problems or owning a dsm is going to get very expensive for you!! ;)

I replaced the ball joints because there is a safety recall on them and they looked like crap.. So I figured hey they look bad lets fix them before they break while I am driving down the road.. The wheel bearing had no crazy side to side play or anything crazy.. No symptoms while the car is on the rack in the air but while replacing the ball joints I noticed the on back of the hub where I could see part of the bearing it was damaged.

Overall I didn't think I was throwing parts at it but hey I got a great running car for less then a $1000 into it. :) Good thing my pockets run deep.

Lol you say that now just wait a few years owning the dsm and tell me how deep they are after hahaha. Just messin with ya bro!! It takes a good eye to see wheel bearing play sometimes. Glad you got it all fixed bro enjoy the new safe ride LOL :)

I will admit though I have found it more expensive and harder to find quality parts for sure.. Thanks and thanks for the help I appreciate it.
