weird sound when starting car on 2g 97 gst

hi...this started happening like a week ago...out of no where...i started the car and it made this grinding noise and it felt like the car didnt want to start like its low on battery...then the next day it rarely wants to start..i have to wait awhile if i wanted the car to start again after driving...so i replaced the starter today with a new one and i cleaned my battery terminals...now the car starts strong but it has a weird somewhat grinding noise...and its loud...what could i be missing?..any help would be appreciated

From the sounds of it the starter could need shimmed due to not fully disengaging the flywheel, or the teeth on the flywheel could be damaged causing the starter to not fully catch it and slip, causing the grinding your hearing.

Make sure the starter you got was for the type transmission you have. The autos and manuals have different length shafts for the gear. The nose of the auto is shorter than the nose of the manual.

+1 the auto starers are different from the manual ones.
