weight loss for 98GST SPYDER

you know were the tire goes in the trunk of the spyder, mine has rust in it and looks heavy and i wanted to know if cutting it out and just riveting in a flat piece of sheet metal would make me lose any structure or stability of the the car. also I have no problem completely removing the front and rear crash bars I just have the same question, does it ruin the rigidity (I know I can't spell) of the car. DOES ANYBODY HAVE THE WEIGHT FOR THE STOCK GST SPYDER?

A factory spyder weighs in around 3000lbs. Removing the crash bars wont take away any big weight, i have taken them both off before and it really isn't worth risking your car or life for a mere 3-4 lbs. If you plan on getting a fmic then go ahead and take off the front crash bar, otherwise leave it alone. And doing that sheet metal idea also is useless. Just sand the area down and spray paint it to prevent rust from spreading further.

Just a side note. Google is a great tool to help for spelling. Trust me, I use it a lot when I get stumped on spelling a word, . If you really wanna save weight, just remove the top, you live in Hawaii bro! Unless of course you dont have a garage.

ok honestly I wanted to route my exhaust out the center of the rear bumber. and the tire well is in the way. REASON: the exhaust already goes down the center of the car why put bends in it when I can do something different for the shows.
Also I was told those crash beams wiegh like 30LBS. each.

Did you forget the rear axle is what the exhaust also routes around? It goes up and over.

yah i did a custom exhaust setup wich brought it straight down the center and then it just under the axle then veered to the left for the pre existing exhaust hole. but my question still remains unanswered can i remove that bowl were my tire went and weld or rivet in plain sheet metal for a flat trunk. there are multiple reasons for this. but i will not do it if i lose the regitety of my car, i amv trying to make things better not worse.

Yes, people have removed it and welded in sheet metal in it's place. I believe there are some threads with pictures.

dont do a flat sheet it will flex too much. Get some lines pressed into the flat sheet.

do you think i should weld a piece of UNISTRUT between the to frame looking pieces under my sheet metal to strengthen it up?????

Knock yourself out. If you decide to go with it, I suggest using stainless steel, have several beads run across the long side and maybe 1 or 2 on the shorter side or weld a flat bar of steel to reduce flex. I don't recommend aluminum because it's trickier to weld and different metal contacts will promote galvanic corrosion.

I think I am going to attempt this as well in the race car so that the fuel cell has something solid to mount to. If you end up doing it let me know how it goes. I will probably go with a steel sheet instead of aluminim and multipul support bars.
