420A Way to make 97-99 VSS work in 95/96 cars?

Another question from me, in doing research I've learned that the 95/96 cars had different VSS' than the 97/99 cars. My question is simple, specifically for the manual transmission/NVT-350 cars.


Can I just swap in a 97-99 gauge cluster and use the 97-99 VSS with no issue? Or does the signal go to the ECU and the ECU send it to the cluster?


They sell replacement sensors all over eBay and I have this feeling it's the later style of sensor even though it claims compatibility with the 95-96 cars.

I did more research and with the help of @BLACK'98DSM I can answer this for anyone in the future curious.

Yes, you can make it work. However you need the 97-99 ECU and the gauge cluster to match. The VSS sends the signal to the ECU, which translates it and sends it to the cluster. So yeah. Just the cluster and the VSS won't be enough, you need the right year ECU.

Alas. All the replacement sensors they make are the 97-99 style which will read 2x as fast as the 95-96 sensors do(and they also have a slightly different plug).
