I have a Autometer Water Temp Gauge and have been trying to figure out how to install it for awhile now, the sensor on it is pretty big. I was wondering if anyone has installed one of these before or if anyone knew where I could screw it into? Any help at all would be wonderful because i didn't find anything searching
 
Do you have any unused holes in your thermostat housing? The sender should have come with a few adapters so you can use various sized holes to thread the sender in (at least Autometer gauges do).

Preferably, the sender would be placed in the lower thermostat housing rather than the upper thermostat housing.

I got mine from Road Race Engineering. They just sent me the right size for the Eclipse. I think it was about $35. I have a pic in my gallery of my engine bay and you can see it installed with an Autometer probe. I actually had to re-tap the threads because the Greddy piece didn't accommodate the probe. No big deal though.

I have an autometer cobalt gauge. It comes with three wires (right? it's been a while); IGN / PWR / GRND and I have the 1/8 NPT sender installed on the lower portion of a 1G thermo housing. My question is, where are you hooking up the electrical wires to? I have IGN to the big black/white wire in the ignition column, the PWR to my cig lighter, and the ground to the chassis in the interior. My problem is, the damn thing is never accurate. Any help? what am I doing wrong?

Most likely its poor grounds. I.e. your sensor has a different ground than the gauge. Meaning, voltage is a differential. I can read 5v with a multimeter. But what I am actually reading is 5V above ground. So if ground is say at a hypothetical 2000v potential I read the positive at 2005V potential, I would read only 5v.

The point is, if the engine is ground differently than the rest of the chassis ... or just the sensor itself, it could give false readings.

Do you have the short sweep or long sweep? The senders are different between the two so make sure you have the right one.

This is weird because my brother is having the same problem. He has the long sweep Cobalt gauge and it's not accurate either. (Right around 170* it's close to what the ecu sender is reading, but as the temperature gets farther from 170* the Autometer gauge gets off by more and more.) We already sent the gauge back to Autometer and they gave us a new one but it does the same thing. Since we got a new harness with the new gauge we tried swapping the harness but it didn't change anything either (Autometer said they sometimes have problems with the harnesses). So next we're going to put in a new sender and hopefully it fixes the problem.

BTW, my brothers long sweep gauge has 5 wires - black (ground), red (acc. power), white (lights), and there are 2 wires from the sender (purple and gray). We have the black grounded to the chassis in the interior, red to cigarette lighter, and white to either cigarette lighter or radio. He also has the sender in a 1g lower thermostat housing.
 
I don't get it :( I have the short sweep ones (water and oil pressure) because I'm cheap :) I'm going to call extreme and get some new sensor just to make sure that's not the problem. Any other ideas from anyone? I love how I can put a whole damn dsm together with a set of sockets and a wrench, but I can't wire a damn 3 wire gauge :coy:
 
deflator: I just wanted to let you know that I measured a spare 2g upper radiator hose I had - I measured it at 34.5mm.


blcknspo0ln: I changed the sender in my brothers car today with a brand new one and the gauge is still off (compared to the stock sender and a Dakota Digital sender for his fan controller). At operating temperatures the Autometer gauge reads about 20* too high.

We have every aftermarket part in his car grounded to the same distribution block, so they are all seeing the same ground. I don't understand how only this one gauge could be affected then.
 
I had the same problem a while ago... I simply added 2 grounding straps from the motor to the fire wall and strut tower... Gauges all read perfict now. I think sometimes the factory ground straps rust over time and dont do as good of a job. HTH:thumb:
